Seems to have quite long span!, thank you Deino, the plane looks much better at this angle, and very menacing 🙂
Wings are canted down, seems these small movable fins are not enough for it directional stability, counting on how long the plane is (or seems to be), this would not be surprising.
Canards seems to be canted upwards, much like the eagletalon early picture
I can see better the dorsal fins now.
To be frank, J-20 seems to be somewhat conservative in some things, and while can’t see a bit of it topology and surface, one can see from it frontal picture , that the lift surface over the fuselage is not very pronounced, the curvature seems to be even smaller than the F-35s upper surface.
I still can’t see the dorsal fins in these pictures, I probably need help
I wonder if Russia would sell the PAK-FA to China??? Which, would give the PLAAF both the PAK-FA and J-20. Which, be a good insurance policy against the failure of the latter. Plus, it would provide valuble insight in to Advance Russia Technology….
Of course it would be stupid on Russia’s part. Yet, that has stopped her so far.
Quite boring Million Dollar Question, IMO
I rather would like to know if the Pakfa’s LEVCOMS generate local lift
Have already seen a nickname for this aircraft, they call it “the Mastodon” a Mammut like animal probably bcs of its larginess, clumsiness and ugliness. I hope will be catchy…..;)
Well, who knows, probably is not a fighter, but a much heavier aircraft, anyways, the J-10 is still a young program, I don’t see the need for a new fighter for the PLAAF, but they need a striker.
I agree with you, this aircraft seems to be too big and heavy, at least, from these pictures
The Pakfa is so well designed for multirol duties that the bomb bays are placed along the wings, matching their addded weight with the center of lift to minimize balance issues when loading, this can’t be said for the f-35, for example.
Beautiful design
Does this plane have rounded intakes? like the Rafale ones?, for me it looks like it has, not sure though.
Yes, you got it right, the author has confirmed the original image was doctored to omit some details when he posted it. The J-20 should be longer, especially when you compare it with the J-10:
Way too long!, wonder how the bomb bay is arranged if this picture is real, wonder if the bomb bays are tandem, wonder if is not photoshopped 🙂
Nothing was showed in that pic.
But what about this?
That’s nice, where is the original link?, very high wing setting, f-35 like fins, all movable fins, who knows, is the same thing from the original picture, and while (at least to me) is not the ‘revolutionary’ airframe i was waiting for, is interesting and decent.
Must say, it looks a bit heavy…but is just me, waiting for more detailed pictures
If that 5% weight reduction achieves the design objectives, then the project is not over-engineered.
It is , in my eyes, is over engineered if it achieve it objetives, is a shameful failure if does not.
You don’t understand it, over enginering is not a applied thing, is a conceptual thing, if the plane was designed with such goal, is overengineered from the beggining.
What things went wrong?
5 tons of overweight, amongst many other things
I like better the semantic discussion on what is actually ‘over-engineered’
IMO, over-engineered is to make a immense efford that is not proportional with the result, so for example an airframe that becomes 10 times more complex to build and maintain ,to save 5% of weight from a conventional layout, (considering that the change was only done to decrease it weight), is a case of over engineering.
I must agree the Raptor is a case of under-engineering, things just went wrong.
just like conventional horizontal tailplanes.
Much like the russian 144, I think I will consider this J20 thing the first truly 5th gen fighter, at last 😀
Oh well, let’s wait and see, probably is another photoshop
IMVHO, given on how the red star is located, seems that there are not rudders over that surface, making me thinking that the whole tail is a control surface.
There seems no indication of a conventional taiplane as well
I know most people here are f-23 fans (that horrible plane designed upside down..) but IMVHO, throwing rudder and tail control for a single surface is and was a bad idea, let’s wait for it canards…must have them
Russian mission was always to sink carriers, not to operate them, active international interventionism was never a priority for their national policies.
Thanks Pinko for your Bigfoot 😀
To me looks like a mig-25..
But looks like this plane..or ‘plane’ does have a high wing mount, like the one in the F-15/mig-25, and does not have (to me) a canopy with the ‘bubble’ design, like the mig-25/23
********
Hmmm, I seriously think is a Mig-25
I think the PAKFA looks magnificent. I dare say its the better looking 5th Gen. My guess is China does NOT have a delta canard but a design similar to the PAKFA / F-22.
While not a great fan of the 5th gen thing, I must agree with you, quite nice design, and very challenging even for a simple and superficial sight, I would love to see these tailplanes deleted and their LEVCONS extended forming canards…that would be a simple yet radical change, and design, would love to see such great advance for the chinese plane.
The big question for the PAKFA is to know if it LEVCONS generate lift, if that’s true, the plane should have a truly 5th gen thing, this is the 100 million question 😀
That 6 years of development is normal for these kind of programs, little whinner
