    Evolved free will, maybe!
Trying to have a sensible conversation with Christians makes me realise the frustration Galileo must have felt when he tried to convince the Roman Inquisition that the Earth wasn’t the centre of the Universe…

So you’ve never had a single sensible conversation with a Chrisian ? I’ve had similar experiences with Catholics, Baptists, you name it,and atheists as well. This is one topic that always raises high feelings, and I’d ask again , why ? If I believe and you don’t, what’s the big deal ?

An often quoted, phrase from various religions. But religion also tells us of divine intervention, along with acts of god and gods will.

    Basically another unquantified contradiction.

How contradiction ? Man was given free will to conduct his life as he pleased. If by divine intervention you mean natural disasters like floods, earthquakes or famines, I have just as much trouble as anyone else over why these terrible events always seem to afflict those who have precious little to start with.

The short answer kev is that man was given free will and there are rotten apples in every barrel. The denial of and covering up of abuse should be abhorrent to every true Christian of any denomination.

Mr. Bee informs me that something called ” The World Cup ” is being staged later this year – not something which fills me with excitement by any means, but I’ve always liked this World Cup 1990 song by New Order with its rap by wots-‘is-name.

Well my emotional crutch suits me just fine, and if anyone else skips through life without one, that is OK too. All of us can only find out one way anyway, but I promise not to say I told you so.

But that’s exactly the point of belief – if you sincerely believe something, then to you it’s real.
I can’t tell you how infuriated I am to see the suggestion that as a Christian Ryan beats his children. Seriously, I’m really insulted.
When I was at university I was intrigued by the different way the science students thought. To them, nothing was acceptable unless you could prove it,nothing else mattered but good solid proof.
But I don’t see any reason to let that be your only rule for life. It’s perfectly acceptable to me to think that there’s room for stuff that you can never prove.

    Ryan.

Why is it that I suspect your version of the disciplining of a child involves physical beatings and constant indoctrination? Is beating the crap out of your children until they believe a demonstration of God’s love?

Let’s just say that we non-believers are right, just for a moment. Isn’t it a good thing that when you die you won’t be able to see the astonishing truth of the disappointment of all the empty rhetoric and wasted energy imposed on you by the ‘Church’?

I’m a Christian and I certainly didn’t raise my daughter that way, and neither did any of my Christian friends.
Why is it that the question of belief raises such strong feelings ? I believe, you don’t. It’s only a big deal if each tries to impose their view on the other by force.
Anyone here understand the meaning of the word ” tolerance ” ?
