Wittering – Harrier Gr3 XV779
Cottesmore – I believe that is also a GR3 now. 4 Sqn have a Hunter outside their hangar and 1 Sqn have the Spit inside.
Leeming – none are on public view, but the gate guard is a Javelin FAW4 XA634, and there is another Javelin and Phantom on site.
Linton-on-Ouse – JP3 XN589
Wyton – Canberra XH170
Does anyone know what the air to air capability of a GR7/9 is compared to a Sea Harrier from 1982?
No, but having a rather large airfield, and four F3s makes life a little more comfortable…
A good reason why they would not use non USAAF colours:
B-17 Flying Fortress G-BEDF Sally B is the last remaining airworthy B-17 in the UK, from where she flies regularly at air shows, memorial flypasts and commemorative events as a memorial to the USAAF in Europe.
Aeronut – it would be a nice gesture if she could be flown to a new home in preservation but I fear the days of generocity have gone!
I believe she hasn’t flown since December 2004/Jan 2005 IIRC… May be a sticking point.
You’d have to fit the C-17 in c. 2060 as well…
Can’t help feeling the only reason it was on any of the TV news was that it showed video footage of some poor chap dying (C5 did at least according to the better half).
Utterly disgraceful.
28 miles on Lincs roads is about 3 and half days of travelling.
I may be exaggerating for effect but the locals will no doubt agree!
Add a day to get through Lincoln itself… 😉
Not to mention moving the Visitor Centre and re-organising the Visitor Guides many of whom live nearer to Coningsby than Scampton.
Lincolnshire CC run the Visitor Centre so who would foot the bill of their move?
Pretty much what I meant when I mentioned public access.
It may be an interesting future for Scampers, particularly if Robin Doncaster Hood Sheffield airport demands some controlled airspace…
went tech
Does that mean it’s more traditionally “unservicable”?… 😉
Can we establish just exactly WHICH Andover(s) we are talking about as everyone is saying ‘it’ and ‘she’ yet no one has quoted a serial. As far as I know, Andover C.1 XS606 is still operated by ETPS, XS596 is still operated in ‘Open Skies’ titles (but not painted Raspberry Ripple) and I wonder if C.1 XS646 and HS748 XW750 are also still airworthy?
Last year ‘606 and ‘646 were doing “stuff”, with ‘596 being employed on “Open Skies” work. XW750 was put into storage around Christmas 2004.
Also used for general crew currency flying as well I believe.
Heard a story the other night that the Battle of Britain flight may be moving from Conningsby to Scampton if Scamton gets the money required for work on the airfield.
Would that be the small matter of the rumoured runway resurfacing. Would need to organise all the public access too. It’s not like they take up lots of space at CGY.
What if it was MOD UK policy to have a female Red pilot for political reasons – would they override the existing system if the Reds turned her down?
Interesting to see how equal opportunities law would deal with that…
We’ll wait and see. I think those in relatively high places would let common sense prevail. The name of the game is safety after all…
Cranwell – wasn’t it opened as an RNAS Airship base in 1915, which would probably put it very near the top of continually military operated bases with permanent use (as opposed to visiting/exercise traffic)…
Doesnt Hurricane PZ865 have a civil reg no G-AMAU? or is that now defunct?
It was listed in an old Ian Allan “Civil Aircraft Markings” as having the dual identity, along with G-AISU in a late 70s/1980 edition I have somewhere, but I suspect they were actually long defunct by then…
All pilots in the canadian airforce have to go through the NFTC not just the top few
Indeed, but the standard on 19(R) will be no lower…
I believe the RAF is has a contract to send a set number each year…
