Well Mrs C, its like this, Malaya is lovely at this time of year, and the kids would love the experience……
Don’t forget to pack your buckets, spades, JCBs and mosquito repellent (or should that be Hornet repellent?)…
Some great photography can be found here: http://www.derelictplaces.co.uk/main/showthread.php?t=9109
Hello Everyone
Pete West is creating for me a profile of Venom NF2 WR794 and I’m having problems supplying him with suitable research matter to work with. The only profile I can secure is of the NF3 with its larger nose. Venom NF2 WR794 served with No.33 Squadron based at RAF Driffield 1955-57. Does anyone have a profile of the NF2 and/or pictures of this aircraft which I can forward onto him? I did have an excellent profile shot but it went missing (lent it to someone and it was never returned).
On the subject of Pete West (Flypast Illustrator) check out the website I designed for him (simple, yet effective): http://driffieldaerodrome.co.uk/petewest/
Your help in this matter is very much appreciated.
Best Wishes

[SNIP] What would be interesting would be to remanufacture an old wooden Miles/DH/Percival type in composite and see how it compared, wont happen though.
Richard
I’ve often thought about the viability of someone (with deep pockets) building a 99% scale composite version of the DH Mosquito. Built from modern composites and slightly reduced in scale, these adjustments would probably be enough to prevent BAe Defence Systems from stopping such a project. My understanding is that they aren’t that keen on allowing anyone from building an exact replica. The aircraft would be powered by the Merlin and the wings/fuselage covered in doped fabric (as per original). The aircraft would look, sound and smell like an original, but virtually everything onboard would be modern. Just a Suggestion.
Before the ongoing financial crisis, I would have imagined that you would be able to sell maybe two or three to rich collectors (as per FW190/Me262). Now, if you could find a modern commercial for such an aircraft…
Sadly, the idea would probably only be an American project, due to their extensive experience in building using composite materials (Scaled Composites comes to mind).
I agree with Bruce, de Havilland is English, we want new Chipmunks!
What I find annoying is the inability of designers to retain the original cowling when retro-fitting new turbo engines to old designs (DC3, etc).
Chipmunk? Er⦠Pass! I was thinking of an aircraft that would fill a gap. There are hundreds of aircraft that replaced the Chipmunk. We are unable to compete with Boeing or Airbus, but there must be a British design that could be resurrected and sell, but not until the current financial crisis is over? There was the Normen Brittan BN3 single engine design that might make it back into production. Thought as a tail-dragger it might work as a glider tug and parachute club transport.
With deepest sympathy to all concerned β especially his family, friends and work colleagues.

what have the MOD got to test? lol
Slightly off topic regarding testing of exotic aircraft and secret bases, a wind turbine in deepest Lincolnshire recently lost one of its blades and another was bent to ******y (technical term). While everyone thought to blame little green men, my money is on the damage being caused by an UAV, which have been flying around our skies for years β albeit at night. With an increase in UAV types being introduced into test or operational flying, the RAF will one day need a dedicated UAV base. That said, Scampton will need a lot doing to it. Most of the buildings are seen by Defence Estates as being uneconomical to repair. I would like to see mix use β by both the MoD and local government. Most of the AMQs have already been sold.
One of the Imperial War Museum DVD’s, “The RAF at War”, has a “special feature” RAF instructional video on how to ditch on water included.
Makes for some interesting viewing. π
Dinghy Dinghy Dinghy – Prepare for Ditching!!!
I didn’t know that every Halifax bomber was fitted with a pocket battle ship!!! Honest, they are!!!
Regarding recent events in New York, me thinks the pilot was a former Flying Boat captain in a previous life. He, like his passengers might not be sitting on a cloud, but I hope he’s on cloud nine – brilliant piece of flying.
I wonder how many Flight Sim junkies are trying to replicate his flight?
Thunder and Lightnings by Jan Mark (again). Would like to see it made into a TV drama or feature film.
Sorry if the above offends, but I have had one nightmare of a day and am doing my best to cheer myself up.
New Guinot signing for 2009 Season WORLD EXCLUSIVE!!!
While the young women are, well – you know; take a look at who they’ve signed up for the 2009 season:

Don’t want to step over the mark, but according to Babel Fish, it’s:
Support Fire on L’ Hammail Wadi
That said, Babel Fish isn’t that reliable at times, so you better off getting Avion Ancien to translate anyway…
Best Wishes and Happy New Year!!!

Well, with a bit of luck, Father Christmas is on his way delivering presents for one and all.
I dearly hope everyone who calls this forum home, as well as the staff at Key Publishing, has a wonderful, peaceful day. Don’t eat too much. Chill out and enjoy Dr Who (BBC1 6pm).
Best Wishes

P.S. Thinking of creating an online petition urging David Tennant not to leave the Tardis…
My concern is for the two former RAF Andovers – formally with The Queen’s Flight. Both are in Africa. At least one of them should be flown back to the UK.
Regarding the fate of the UK based 748s, I understand that the North Essex Transport Group are looking for a airliner for the collection.

Given the ever deceasing budget and the increase in costs, should the RAF look to only have one fast jet platform for the future? As such as the Netherlands, and Canada for example have operated a single swing role platform successfully for a number of years could the RAF do the same?
When I first saw the F15E Strike Eagle at the last Finningley Air Display I thought WOW, this could easily replace the Tornado F3 and GR1, Bucaneer, Jaguar and possibly the Harrier, too? The aircraft would have come in on budget and on time as well.
Likewise you could have replaced the VC10, Tristar, Nimrod and BAe146 with the Airbus family of aircraft (A320 to A340). I’m still surprised that no one thought about using an Airbus airframe for the Nimrod MRA4, which is only a platform for the high-tech kit, which it what everyone appears to be excited about. No problem in grafting on a weapons bay or trying to fit new wings to old fuselages.
That’s nine aircraft types replaced by two aircraft families.
