And a terrorist with a cessna packed full of explosives is going to comply with the no fly zone???? I think not!

True, but if all aircraft are banned from flying near the Olympic Village, any aircraft that are picked up on radar will stick out like a sore thumb or a terrorist on a one way mission.

Careful, you’ll be getting a visit from the anti-terror branch for tea and cakes…….

Damn I’m out of tea bags!!!

Seriously though, if I can think it, then the terrorists can think if too, and so should the authorities, and that is why we have an effective (?) exclusion zone around London.

Regarding terrorism, as long as they think big we are all safe. I could go into detail about what these terrorists could do, but won’t.

I’ll just take my bomb there by train then rather than drop it out of a very conspicuous and slow moving biplane.

It is more likely that someone might fill a Cessna with explosives (plus fuel cans and bags of nails) and crash dive into the middle of the opening ceremony – live in front of millions watching on TV.

Elstree is 15.58 miles from the Olympic Stadium. A Cessna travels around 2.5 miles per minute. That’s a flight time of just over six minutes!!! No need to bypass airport security or bag checks at the Olympic Village. Thankfully those who do plot such attacks always leave enough clues that they will be caught well before the opening ceremony, unless it is a lone-nut who works without relying on the internet or mobile phone technology to secure instructions!.

What I imagine will happen is that some poor pilot will make a slight mistake and will probably be shot down. Ooops!!!

The only slight difference was that the structure was unsafe at Hemswell and had to come down regardless of insurance. IF the hangar at Binbrook is safe then the insurance company will decide what happens to it… repair or rebuild…

I dearly hope so, but I’m a pessimist these days (not an optimist as previously stated – can’t tell my left from my right these days).

Looking at the pictures I would imagine that for insurance purposes it’s a write off (as is most of our collective aerodrome heritage). Binbrook74, you must feel crap, it’s just that I cannot see anyone using their new-found insurance money repairing this building, while it will be cheaper to start afresh. That is what happened at former RAF Hemswell.

First Hemswell, then Binbrook – I’m waiting for the same to happened at Driffield.

We may have messed up this country (or some of us have), but they can never take away “Our” Spitfire!

I’ve just realised something profound: we are discussing the Space Shuttle in the context that it is about to be retired and the fleet are to become museum pieces. The first flight was on 12th April 1981 – thirty years ago. Twenty years before and to the day Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin became the first man in space.

Coincidentally, the likelihood of one coming to a UK museum is about as likely as a gnat giving birth to a badger 🙂

Give that one maybe 10 years! It’ll happen (a gnat giving birth to a badger that is…)…

Can anyone confirm if Pete West is okay? He works for Flypast and creates those wonderful three-view-illustrations. I cannot remember if he lives in Christchurch or not?

CONFIRMED SAFE AND WELL AND NOT LIVING ANYWHERE NEAR CHRISTCHURCH. My thoughts are with those affected.

[SNIP] This was followed on the 26th July by Bluegill Prime, ex-RAF Thor No. 180 (58-2291), again with a live W-50 warhead. The motor malfunctioned at ignition and the RSO blew the missile up on the pad, destroying both missile and emplacement and contaminating the launch complex with plutonium which took nearly three months to clear up.

It took two weeks to clean up the plutonium and three months to clean the mess made by those who watched a nuclear missile explode on the launch pad! Well, what would you do if you saw a nuclear tipped missile explode! 😀

Perhaps the RAF and/or RAFM might save the Comet at Lyneham?

I know of one chap who started with a cockpit. Years later and Tony Agar’s Mosquito can be found at the Yorkshire Air Museum. That’s dedication for you!

How much is the looming conflict with Iran going to cost?

It will cost us nothing. Just let Israel drop a few bombs and then retire to a safe distance. We just need to practice not getting involved. Imagine the UK becoming a neutral state?

Save RAF Driffield!!! Long live the Duchy of Grand Fenwick!!! And where have all the moderators gone?
