Considering that most aircraft in the RAF are flying platforms for radar or carry cargo, fuel, bombs and bullets, reintroducing an historic type isn’t as daft as it sounds.
Aircraft haven’t got any faster, while stealth can and probably will become obsolete when new technologies emerge.
My biggest concern over the whole Nimrod cut is the loss of long-range SAR cover, something no defence chief or politician so far seems to have mentioned.
Agreed! Perhaps the MoD could invest in a few CASA CN235 MPA as used by the Irish Air Corps. Or perhaps they could share them? One side painted in Eire colours and British colours on the other side :O)
I’m sure they can add some drop-tanks to increase their range. Picture here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Irish_Air_Corps,_City_of_Derry_Air_Show,_May_1996_(03).jpg
Then again, did not the RAF employ the Avro Lancaster as a MR aircraft? Perhaps the BBMF could offer up PA474?
According to Airfix the propellers on the HP42 should be painted in G9 Dark Brown :O)
In the late 60s and up to the mid-to-late 70s when this country last seemed on the brink of oblivion, there was talk of a military coup in this country.
Someone once suggested to me that the army units in London have a restricted amount of ammunition to prevent or make it impossible to stage a coup.
Personally I’d welcome a coup. I’m sure we can show the world how it should be done.
Even in post war years the RAF had over 400 maritime aircraft and now we have none. In a few years time we might have just five front-line squadrons of aircraft and that’s it.
When they stop making the Eurofighter and the Hawk that will be it – no more aircraft building in the UK and whose fault will that be? Both the MoD and BAE Systems, who firstly stopped making civilian aircraft. Then they sold our share in Airbus, though thankfully we still make the wings for various aircraft.
Finally, can I praise the Moderators for keeping this thread open. We have been off topic some time ago but we need to get this off our collective chests. We all feel ruddy peeved off by what has happened. We appreciate our heritage and only have pride in our once first-class aeronautical industry. We have a right to be upset and angry.
Is there no way of stopping this?? Maybe a voluteer group to restore the building??
I’ve fired off a new emails, but they have already removed the roof tiles. I’m hoping that they might postpone the demolition for a few months. The problem is that the building is in the way of profit profit profit. Yet I know of a couple of developers who would have used this building and that is still the case. They believe that the building would have had to be gutted, but they would have retained the interior and exterior character.
It’s not a restoration job for enthusiasts and it would cost around £500k just to gut the building, restore the exterior fabric (walls and roof) and install concrete interior walls and foundations – thus creating a blank canvas. I would retain as much of the interior fixtures and fittings. And no one had that kind of money this side of a recovery. I will be writing off to the directors of Strawsons, but they are deaf to everyone other than their accountants.
Worse day of my life!
Disgusting……………
so how many are fliers??? Two??
Ok £200,000,000 to scrap 9 Nimrods………… ok take the two fliers, fly one to Cosford and one to Duxford for the museums, grand saving on the scrapping costs of £44,444,444 plus change, even allowing for fuel and prepping them, thats a lot cheaper!!!!!!!
I know there is a lot more to it in that price, just thinking out loud.
They are politically too hot for RAFM and IWM to handle, and they are also too big.
I wonder how much it cost to erect those screens?
More than it cost to hire a helicopter…
I hope the attached will prove useful. Someone please remind me who created it – I think it was secured from the old RAF Marham website a few years ago…
Check out: http://www.baesystems.com/ProductsServices/nimrod_mra4.html
Amazing that they haven’t changed their website:
The Nimrod MRA4 offers unrivalled operational effectiveness, incorporating an advanced technical and mission capability and a fully integrated training system and logistics support package.
The Nimrod MRA4 offers a step change in capability in comparison with the previous Nimrod MR2 fleet. It will meet the UK’s Maritime Patrol, Reconnaissance, Intelligence and Strike requirements well into the 21st Century The Nimrod MRA4 will fulfil a number of roles: anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare; maritime reconnaissance and intelligence collection; search and rescue and attack.
Err, Phillip it’s the elected politicians who make the final decisions.
[something witty here]
Terrorists break into Woodford and plant bombs, which destroy Nimrod MR4s. Terrorists caught and are given life in prison.
OR
Mix of civil servants and uniformed goons decide we cannot afford to introduce into service the Nimrod MR4, so order that they be scrapped. Mix of civil servants and uniformed idiots are then promoted and/or received knighthoods and big pensions.
Now the above is what I think I can get away with. What I would like to write would probably get me into some serious trouble. I think Spike Milligan had the right idea: Line up the [rude word] and shoot them with a blunderbuss filled with their own s**t.
It has been suggested to me in the past that the condition of an aircraft was exaggerated, which justified its scrapping.
I think the common consensus is that the change in management at the RAF Museum will be a deciding factor on this matter, not to mention the kind-hearted nature of those who are in the driving seat.
Did the RAF Museums report exaggerate the condition of the aircraft, to justify the fact they didn’t want it?
The RAF Museum do want her, but only time will tell – give it six months!
Let’s hope that the funds can be found to move her to a place of safety before the end of the financial year – perhaps to RAF Shawbury to be stored long-term, until space can be found at Cosford. If she is to be moved then she will be cut into pieces first. My understanding is that no one is allowed inside or underneath her.
I would like to see Comet XK699 (RAF Lyneham) moved under cover (and to a place of safety instead of being scrapped) – sooner rather than later (perhaps before the end of the financial year). Because there isn’t the space at Cosford I’d like to see her moved to RAF Shrawbury.
And yes I’d like to see WA591 fly – over former RAF Driffield on a nice summer’s day.
