[SNIP] A subject we don’t see very often.
And a subject we won’t see for much longer! 😡
How about if we all wait a few years, and when the MoD are unable to find a buyer for one of their new aircraft carriers, we could accommodate all our museums and pet projects in or on that instead :O)
The MoD are more than willing waste billions on aircraft carriers we will probably end up scrapping, because we cannot afford to use them and probably wont find a buyer for, while they insist on securing a few pennies from an organisation who doing more than most to preserve our past.
This collection might not be paying the commercial going rate, but with their tenancy the building is not going to rot. I can understand if the MoD need the space, but if they don’t and this organisation is forced to relocate then the building will deteriorate, and that will cost the MoD more. Maybe they should be the one’s paying the collection to keep their collection there.
On the subject of the MoD and money. I am assured that the Comet at RAF Lyneham is earmarked for preservation UNLESS the £50,000 cannot be found to move her. That’s £50,000 – which the MoD probably **** away on waste every hour!
What reason/s are given for these closures>
[SNIP] its better to put your efforts in campaigning to ensure Bicester is preserved, protected and maintained [SNIP]
Sorry, but I’m not going through the same derision and apathy and indifference and frustration and heartache, not only from the general (and local) public but also from those who I had thought would be willing to engage. I also feel that I would only hinder any effort to save Bicester.
I haven’t given up on Driffield, but neither am I optimistic.
Our aerodrome and aeronautical heritage should come with a health warning, I fear.
Time is not on our side, but in time it will be proven that our aerodromes were important, but only after it’s too late. Maybe one day I will revisit RAF Driffield – fully restored on a glorious summer’s day – but only in a holographic or virtual-reality environment.
Agreed, most of the buildings at Driffield will be lost – ALL of the buildings if the owners succeed.
In all honesty, no airfield will be preserved sans Duxford, because the money simply isn’t there. A lot of people suggested that Newton is or rather was in better condition, but that’s in the process of being demolished. Bicester – best preserved site in the UK (we are told) and protected – will go the same way (probably) because there’s no money.
What I learnt is that proving that preserving places like RAF Driffield can be profitable isn’t enough. Mindset kills – it kills our heritage and our economy and everything in between, because people aren’t open to change or can’t think out of the box.
Obviously it doesn’t have to be that way, but it is BECAUSE NO ONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO – HOW TO CHANGE THINGS. And we are not going to get anywhere if the majority of us think that preservation is about access rights to abandoned aerodromes on a weekend. No one wants to rock the boat.
NOW CAN SOMEONE PLEASE LOCK THIS THREAD AND THROW AWAY THE KEY :O)
Oh, RAF Driffield. THINKS: Yes I remember that place – someone where in Yorkshire, I think?
The latest…
…there is no latest.
We are still (?) in a recession when it comes to housing development; The housing market is still stagnant; No one can get or afford a mortgage.
The owners are still Strawsons Property who have no intention of listening to anyone other than their accountants. They also own RAF Upwood.
I still think (as do others) that the accommodation blocks and married quarters can be reused. Not worried about the decay – most of which is superficial, but Strawsons aren’t listening.
So Driffield will end up like Swinderby and Newton and Upwood.
Is there any good news? Well, local planners turned down plans by Strawsons to redevelop Upwood, which was reported on both Flypast and AIX forums. But Strawsons will probably change the font when reprinting its plans and that will be enough to get them passed.
The hangars are used by established businesses so they are safe. The airfield will probably be covered in wind turbines one day.
Various airfields. I reckon the premise is that is aircraft are withdrawn then the base will close. No Nimrod MR4 then no Kinloss. Same with Harriers. Lyneham is closing. What I find surprising is that a number of smaller sites might survive.

Shame that their choice of rousing music to accompany the images was the Luftwaffe March from the Battle of Britain movie……………..
At least it wasn’t the theme from Star Wars :O)
Cheers everyone – your input was very much appreciated.
I do hope that this new book is more about correcting errors made over time and not another conspiracy (Free French use unsuspecting RAF to remove Communists in Gestapo jail). I’m too old for that crap. Give me an honest narrative any day.
Did you watch BBC3’s The First Men in the Moon? Thought that the same (affordable) treatment could given to the Amiens raid. What do you think?
Why not wait and read the [new] book, chaps!
We have been waiting and waiting and waiting – what is the hold up, anyone?
Firstly, I am aware of the other threads, and so does my jammed printer when I tried to print-out one thread a few weeks ago…
What concerns me are the difference/s in figures relating to the number of prisoners awaiting execution or those who escaped or who were recaptured/killed, etc.
Did the Germans actually plan to kill so many and how? Maybe to understand Operation Jericho (post war name) I need to know what the Germans did to the French. I am aware of Oradour-sur-Glane, so maybe killing 200 prisoners on one day in one location would have happened.
There are other issues. Some argue that most of the bombs exploded, but others claim most were dud?
And “And the Walls Came Tumbling Down”, how much of that is Fiction? Are there fictionalised characters or is the quality of facts and figures open to question?
What would make an excellent film would be Operation Jericho, using CGI and green screen. Very few speaking parts, but loads of extras (cheap as chips). CGI airfield and prison would suffice. Just need a good script.
🙂 Maybe Oleg Maddoxs new up and coming sim S o W could be used in the future

Very impressive. Add “film look” and natural camera and action movements and your half-way there.
