This was one from August in Munich
And this was only one. Makes you think what it must have been like, that there where hundreds of them exploding at the same time and night after night with the firestorms. Horrific.
There must be hundreds of Known UXB locations and unknown’s around the UK. In particular the South West. Only this Summer a 50kg was blown up in Cornwall, remarkably in almost as new condition. Makes me think too of Plymouth, must be hundreds of them from DA’s to just faulty fuses, damaged on impact, failed to go off or went into boggy ground. I got my first job in a Motor accessory shop in Plymouth Tavistock road, opposite the reservoir, it was said that a 500kg went in there but because it was so deep they decided to leave it. Well that was in 1965. And still plenty of bomb damage in the city even then.
This was first shown on TV In about 1980. Have to say it must be my most watched documentary ever. It was filmed by the station commander Group Captain Ilif cousins with a Belle and Howel 40 DA.8mm Camera. The clip showing the expression on the Lanc Pilots face with a full bomb load on take off as he is biting his lips, will she unstick from the run way. Had me on the edge of my seat watching this bit. I got a friend to record it for me on VHS. The blank tape cost me £12. Couldn’t afford a machine. Still got the tape though quite warn now.
I am fully engaged with the film at that point! No matter how many times I see it (and I know the aircraft comes to no harm) I am always on the edge of my seat willing the thing into the air!
As Peter O’Toole say’s. “Fly Yah B******d Fly!” When shown after 9pm of course.
Can you fly it? Yes but can you get it down again? Oh yes that I know I can do! Brilliant film. :eagerness:
Just happen to find this.

Excellent quality clear photo’s well done. Specially of the BMW 801. Also known as the Butcher bird Torquay Tip and Run raiders.
Heavy gauge what look to be steel anodized fins and riveted on. I would not think bomb related more marine could be something to do with target towing.
JU88. WOW! Fantastic! If I win enough on the Lottery I’ll Fund the whole recovery. Yes conservation is a problem no matter how much money you throw at it. Thing is, even for a short while the history of it and photos would be worth its weight in gold, far more than just leaving it in the sea don’t you think?
Neville Duke springs to mind, in a Hunter During the 1950’s. The aircraft was at Colerne museum for some years in all red livery.
Should’ve gone to Specsavers. 🙂
Yeh! fing is Specsavers didn’t exist then. So I could believe what I was seeing and still do. 🙂
For me the VC10 Is the best looking aircraft design ever. Followed by the Boeing 747. These days design looks and style don’t matter so much as more importantly, how many passengers you can pack in to an aeroplane. Bit like a brand new Stage coach local bus. No one really cares as long as you can get from A to B.
I bet Dailymail sales went sky high after the article and the website crashed as well. WOW! The only thing that seemed to be right were the photos. Was it Devon or Cornwall or a bit of both?
On my next sojourn south i will excitedly await my table at the VC10 Diner!
Yep I have always thought of buying a Jet liner and opening up as a fast food business. What a great idea. People would travel thousands of miles for down to earth food without sky high prices.
😎
Great news! One VC10 has gone to the Classic air museum at Newquay. :eagerness:
