F-15C as today’s best fighter? I can live with that, with a few caveats:
1. EF-2000’s aren’t yet in operational service, and still won’t get Meteor for a while.
2. The reign officially ends in December when the F/A-22 reaches IOC.
I agree – Today? Yes. But it’s getting late in the day.

Survival, from the pilot’s point of view.
9. F-105 Thunderchief (Hell they ought to name the F-35 the Thunderchief II. Similar intakes (well from the top anyway) and it will likely take the title as the heaviest single-engined fighter of all time.)
10. Mirage 4000
I agree – those intakes scream for the jet to be christened the Thud II. Unfortunately, I doubt the P.C. Police would allow that. They’re already not too pleased with the Army using tribal names for choppers.
Some interesting threads!
Just out of interest, does anybody remember the (Revell) F-19 model kit, and “flight sim”?
The “F-19 Stealth Fighter” sim is available for download (as abandonware) on http://www.the-underdogs.org
It’s dated in many ways, obviously, but I think it’s still fun. It’s one of the few flight sims out there in which success in a mission often demanded *avoiding* detection by the enemy, as much as putting the bombs on target.
It also had interesting air-to-air missions, like sneaking up on an AWACS and taking it out without the fighter escort spotting you.
Here in San Antonio, Texas, there is a very powerful (connections in city council) homeowner’s association in a wealthy neighborhood that happens to be right under the approach path for helicopter ambulances landing at one of our big hospitals. Complaining about the noise (most of the AirLife choppers here are Hueys), these people lobbied extremely hard to get the hospital to reroute the choppers’ landing approach so that they would have to circle around the neighborhood and the hospital and approach from the opposite direction. A study of the proposal determined that this could add up to seven minutes to some ambulance flights, depending on where the chopper was coming from. Keep in mind that obviously, a patient arriving on an ambulance chopper is in really bad shape to begin with, and every moment counts. Not that these people cared.
This crazy idea nearly got enough votes to pass! Thank goodness the wealthy neighborhood didn’t have more of the city council under their influence.
That is clearly a MiG-23BN.. Without any doubts it is not a MiG-27…
I thought that the “duckbill” nose was an easy visual indicator of the MiG-27, rather than the longer, rounded nose of the -23. No?
Bulgarian Air Force operated whit MiG-23BN Flogger-H The BN’s were withdrawn in 2000.

That may be, but that’s definitely a -27 in the picture above. Look at the nose.
Misquoted – you’d make an excellent journalist if the above statement is your standard :diablo:
The actual piece of journalistic wisdom is: “Don’t check a good story to death.”
I wasn’t quoting anyone.
This VF-31 F-14 was at Naval Auxiliary Landing Field (NALF) Fentress last Monday when it lost hydraulics and was forced to make an emergency arrested landing. The pilot at the controls was Rear Admiral James A. Winnefeld, Jr., Commander, Carrier Strike Group Two.
It may interest some to know that Admiral Winnefeld (a Lieutenant at the time) was an advisor on the movie Top Gun, and also portrayed one of the “MiG-28” pilots in the film.
Or maybe it won’t interest some to know that. 😀
Just another example of how unreliable some media sources can be. “Hey, let’s dump the truth, add some shocking “facts,” create some controverse and make more money!”
The first rule of Journalism: Never let the facts stand in the way of a good story.
CNN is reporting that it crashed in the UAE.
–Gavin.
Technically, they reported that he crashed while returning to his base in the UAE. He could have actually come down someplace else.
I remember that the Solotrek prototype was being considered for use by US Special Forces at one time, but I don’t know what ever became of the idea. Much bigger than a backpack, Solotrek was a frame that the pilot would stand on/in, with controls for two large overhead ducted fan engines.
arent they the TR-3 model now ?
I believe you’re thinking of the TR-1.
Hey……you think some of you liberals can complain anymore about the Iraq War.
I mean really…I haven’t heard anyone complain about it on this forum ever….please complain more.
In short how about we keep this topic what it’s supposed to be about……the reformation of the Iraqi Air Force.
God what novel idea….sticking to topic.
Come now PII, you know that just isn’t possible. After all, no matter what the topic starts as, it will eventually work its way around to deploring the evil, imperialistic, murderous United States. You know, the horrible juggernaut of global domination, butchering people at a far greater rate than Saddam’s woodchippers and torture chambers ever did. Yep, Iraq was a paradise, under gentle and benevolent leadership before the mean old USA decided to change things.
Who are you to tell what is a poor design?
Sorry, my mistake. I keep forgetting that anyone who dares to disagree with you must be a moron. You are obviously always correct; in fact, what we really should do is abolish the whole “forum” concept, and just turn it into a Q&A site for you to host. “Ask Flex,” we’ll call it. We’ll submit questions and ideas, and humbly wait for you to bestow your omniscient insights. Yes, that’s far better than an honest and open exchange of opinions. Why bother with anyone’s opinion when we all have been blessed with the opportunity to benefit from your divinely granted ability to know all things?
