God is my Co-pilot

Based on the memoirs of fighter pilot Robert L Scott, this is a decent, yet seldom mentioned, war flick with some great dogfight sequences.

Air Force

A B-17 crew goes island-hopping after being caught up in the attack at Pearl Harbor. Decent flick, with some nice flying scenes – not often you see one of the old-style Fortresses!

Fighter Squadron

A P-47 squadron involved in the lead-up to the events of D-Day. Fun movie, nice flying sequences, and you gotta love the Mustangs playing Messerschmitts!

Wild Country – a group of Glasgow teens go camping in the wilds of Scotland, and fall prey to some big beasty on the moors. Not bad.

The Ghost and the Darkness – Val Kilmer plays an Irish engineer tasked with building a railway bridge in Tsavo, only for his workforce to fall prey to a pair of ravenous lions. Based on a true story, too.

JAWS – do I need say any more??

Battle Squadron

Yugoslavian war film about the Partisan air force fighting against the Germans. Obviously pretty low budget (none of the aircraft are of the correct type), but a gutsy war film nonetheless. Worth a watch.

Evil Dead 2

More possessed people mayhem from Sam Raimi. Haven’t seen any of these in ages, so feeling a need to go back and watch the trilogy from the start!

Everyone’s favourite ‘Nam vet goes into Burma to track down a group of misplaced missionaries. Chaos and carnage ensues.

Wings

William Wellman’s 1927 Oscar-winner. Still good to watch, but I didn’t really go much for the new score on the blu-ray (plus the added sound effects kinda took me out of the film!).

Brave

My favourite Pixar film.

Spitfire – The Biography – Jonathan Glancey.

Hell’s Angels

Howard Hughes’s big-budget WW1 aviation flick. Those flying sequences are still staggering.
