Hi dave
well yes there was an extensive article in the Christchurch newspaper about the Peter Jackson film on the Russian Women Fighter pilots. From memory it went into great detail about the aircraft and stars , saying it was to be made in and around Wanaka. Judy Dench and Kate Blanchet were mentioned as actors and it was to be under way by next year or so I thought- I think I kept the article – I will see if it can be found.
After that an investigation was done into the aircraft available and with the in house Polikarpovs, Hurricane, P40s , Catalina, Yaks and La9 I would have thought the whole thing would have been a relatively “doable” movie – especially with Peter jackson – who is as capable as any in the industry – involved.
A script has made it through the funding processes here in Aus based upon the RAAF defence of New Guinea featuring Wirraway and P40 Squadrons – it is apparently awaiting the development of the business plan and project work up before it is put forward for production. Doesn’t mean it will happen but it is 90% through the task so far.

My view
Would it not make sense that as this is a trainer with minimal restoration /maintaince issues then it would be an ideal aquisition for various historic jet operators around the world. I can think of two here in aus who would profit from having this aircraft in the fleet. I would not imagine it will secure a huge bag of gold at auction so is a “Cheap” investment for a jet warbird operator- no doubt there would be a fair mountain of spares on the market soon as well.

Well Mk 12
It’s just that there’s no Spitfires left to shop for so I have to slum it with the rest of the fighters.

Hi all
At the risk of starting a range war here goes.
I think nearly all aircraft movies made have been positive from a number of perspectives.
1) They expose the paying public to Aviation History and mostly stir interest in it – superficially yes but at least they put it in the public domain.
2) They pump a certain amount of income into the operators of these featured aircraft
3) In some cases they form a catalyst to get extinct types flying again
I don’t think CGI is a complete replacement for real aircraft and never will be – It doesn’t work that well , especially up close and there will always be a need for real aircraft in movies.
We as “Experts” – (has been drips under pressure) all decry the crap aspects of the films – even Pearl Harbour was of interest to the paying public – We all hated the inaccuracies and the rubbish CGI – but the public didn’t notice or care and the result for the movement was positive.
My thoughts
John P
Well it also looks a lot overexposed but we are not advancing this much – I can show equally dark shots – what would it prove. Its just MY opinion and I won’t be changing it – I visited Dux before and I will again – In my opinion it could do a whole lot better but conversly it could do a whole lot worse and at least it’s there – a true National Museum – sadly lacking here in Aus.
Moggy there isn’t much left in this and it isn’t very positive which is what James was seeking I think in his post so whilst not taking my bat and ball I think I won’t bother tit for tating any more. The positives at Dux far outweigh the negatives – I am no architect but then none of you are either as far as I know…………. Time will judge who is right or wrong if that is even important
