Yes’ I know and accept Ireland’s less than straight neutrality, for example, the Irish government made no effort to stop Irish nationals joining the British armed forces, nor punished them when they returned. As you are probably aware, there were plans drawn up for British troops to come to the aid of the Free State if she was invaded by the Germans, so it cut both ways
But in the business of the Treaty Ports Ireland failed to live up to it’s obligations IMO. They would have provided safe-havens and bases for Maritime Patrol Aircraft. It’s not as if Ireland didn’t need the cargos that were coming across both the Atlantic and The Irish Sea, particularly food, coal and raw materials – seems like cutting off the nose to spite the face.
Let’s not forget those Irish that cheered for the other side, nor the infamous ‘sorry Hittler’s dead’ telegram
Sorry, aviation forum – Thanks for the Walrus!
But you have to admit if Dev had handed back the treaty ports, as he was supposed to, many Allied seamen and ships lost would have survived – now I know he had to walk a difficult line between neutrality, what he believed and appeasing the hard-line nationalists but he did break the 1937(?) agreement
It’s mainly a cost thing – if someone asks for ‘everything on Operation Planefare’ for example, you’d be there for years. So there’s some financial cut off point, not sure what exactly but this outlines the procedure, that‘s why they like you to narrow the scope of an enquiry. If you want something specific you’ll get it
Glad to be of assistance JDK
For any cynics out there ‘yer but…..’ I know the paperwork went out unmodified because I dealt with it…….I’d suggest that there tends not to be a conspiracy to withhold obsolete info, it’s just ‘out of sight out of mind’ most of the time. The other problem is that you are supposed to get authority from the originator before declassification/downgrading and with almost anything over five years old the command/squadron/unit no longer exists – common sense usually rules in the end though
(Keeping quiet about my classified East German SAM map in the loft)
sorry JDK but your sly dig is out of date, try the FOI act, ask for something specific and you’ll get it – and sharpish too – I know, we recently declassified a Secret logbook from 2003 because some UFO spotter requested it – nothing was removed, nothing was censored, the appropriate pages were photocopied and sent out as written
It’s a shame Mildenhall has gone, my first airshow was the 1976 bicentennial (I was 11) anyone got any photos of that one they’d care to share or know what attended?
That Yorkshire thing – Halli-something
looked like a flying nissen hut, handled like a pig, controls by Heath-Robinson – naaaa, scrap them all (oh, they did, didn’t they? 😉 ) Build more lancasters! Butch can’t have been wrong!
I saw that too – the wing bore a serial in the XD series – Scimitar? However, the clip is taken from a longer smug fashion piece that seemed to be revelling in the destruction of the TSR2 technology – it’s enough to make a grown man weep…… 🙁 What were you beatniks thinking of?
I know there’s little chance but I’d like to see a ‘Russian hangar’ where all the Soviet stuff can be placed. How about a Bear/Badger display? Or a row of Mig 15/17/19/21/23/25/29? Or a few Su? Got to remember ‘the other side’ too! (remember the binning of Ex-Luftwaffe machines post war and all the missed opportunities for preservation.) I know there are a few ex-Sov airframes at Duxford but I’d like more
I’d suggest anyone that points the finger of blame over defence cuts solely at Labour’s door evaluate the Conservative’s record- the ‘Party of defence’ has spent many a happy hour trimming ‘waste’ 😡
‘Frontline First’, ‘Options for Change’ ‘The Nott review’ and binning the military hospitals are just a few ‘savings’ that that spring to mind.
Duncan Sandys anyone? :dev2: :diablo: 😡
er, no, Wellingtons mainly
You can buy repro battledress from theatrical costumiers or militaria specialists – two good points. They are made for the modern ‘fuller’ figure 😉 and you’re not risking damaging historic clothing. Think it will set you back about £100+
But if you’ve spent £1000s on your own Spitfire a few quid won’t make much difference!

Just two I found doing a ‘google’
Tornados being scrapped? I’m getting old, Tonkas historic? I suppose so – liked the prototype colours for the ADV and IDF. Actually the early German Navy ones looked quite funky – any photos?
That should be Roy Bullers
We called him Rab when he was my Sqn Ldr! Can’t remember why for the life of me!
Hi Jonathan,
The headman is a guy called Dougy Robb, ex WO. He’s fighting a rear-guard action to keep the place going but chances are if it becomes untenable he’d be the one to talk to – he scrounged a lot of the stuff there himself. Another chap that’s been involved is Rab Bullers who just about pre-dates radar himself!
http://www.neatishead.raf.mod.uk/ is an old web-page that hasn’t been updated in a while but gives a few photos and contact number
http://www.radarmuseum.co.uk/ is another to try (Mr Robb is the chap in the white short-sleeve shirt)
Not trying to cut the ground out from under Mr Robb’s feet, I’d just like to think there was a back-up plan IF it had to close – And I want Kent’s 259 to survive! (Radar from the Falklands)
Oh, your mail box is full!
