…..were there any plans to graft a Centaurus onto the airframe of a DH9? After all, after an engine change the DH9A was a much better aircraft……. 😉
Super Ninack anyone?
In trying to find an email to ask Media Ops WTH this is all about I was shocked to see what looks like an updated Propagandakompanie style operation being run to ‘get the message out’ – ah well….. got to move with the times I suppose
No doubt we ‘service end-user’s requirements with definite targeting operations solutions’ now
I’m off to leaver some synergies
Though in my day ‘running it up the flag pole and seeing who salutes it’ was a job for the Orderly Officer and Cpl
Well I asked Hendon for more information and did the same on the RAF100 website – so far, nothing
Mate of mine, who’s a serving RAF WO said “A rule of thumb I have always thought to be true, if a design leaves you wondering what the hell it represents, it isn’t doing the job!”
Meanwhile………
……that’s my next question if they come back to me, I’ve kindly sent them a link to this page -I’ve got nothing against the idea, I just don’t understand how anyone will associate it with the RAF, it looks like a Software Company logo
Reply from the RAFM –
“The sticker which is on sale in our shop is the dynamic roundel design which is the branding being used by RAF100 to celebrate the Centenary of the RAF. The RAF100 logo is inspired by the original RAF Roundel and will be being used by all RAF100 partners throughout the year as we commemorate and celebrate the first 100 years of the RAF.
RAF100 is a joint campaign being ran by The Royal Air Force, The RAF Association, The RAF Benevolent Fund, The RAF Charitable Trust and The RAF Museum. The money raised by any of the RAF100 products being sold in our shop will be divided equally between these organisations throughout the Centenary year.”
Which doesn’t really explain why or what
With recent developments in Ground Penetrating Radar etc I understand that archaeologists in North Africa have an embarrassment of previously unknown cities to explore – maybe in the fullness of time the development of this technology it will be possible to sweep large areas for smaller targets lost under the sands
thanks Chris
There are no other Austers on show there.
What happened to the AOP9 that was there years ago? Has it moved on/been binned?
Has anyone got a photo of Sugar when she had the uncensored nose-art, just for historic research you understand……

Don’t think it’s them, they spent most of their days in the ME and Italy
387990 looks like a service number – maybe a tool tag?
I wonder what they’d do if they put on Madam Butterfly? Borrow the HMS Belfast?
Didn’t know she was a USN ship…….
so go to all the effort of finding a Huey for the publicity, don’t go the extra mile to uniform the cast?
But taking your post to it’s logical conclusion why bother painting the aircraft in ‘Memphis Bell’ in correct for period colours as it’s really a film about comradeship etc?
I know, I know, I’m a spotter – but the ‘soldier actors’ look totally ‘ungruntlike’ – US repro Vietnam kit isn’t that expensive and there are plenty of period films/photos doing the rounds to get the look right.
You would have thought, given the construction principles used, it wouldn’t be that difficult to produce another Wimpy from ‘bits’ kicking about – and I’m not just thinking of the sections around UK museums that get mentioned here from time-to-time
Thanks 2banaviator, very interesting
