Thank you Hurn, much appreciated.
Thanks 🙂
Can anyone tell me where the two will depart from for Sundays (todays) visits to Old Warden, Gransden and Bourne airfield?
I was under the impression that it operates with an original Argus..
Perfect, right over my house at 18.48!
What a terrific sight and sound!
Oh believe me I know and understand 🙂
I have known of this aircraft and its location for a long long time. I did make enquiries to the (then?) landowner many many moons ago but he flatly refused anyone to dig it. The saddest thing is I drove past as you were digging and knew that whoever it was was after the Hurricane, but being at work and in a very large vehicle I could not stop !
Am always interested in Hunsdon based aircraft, If you ever do another one drop me a PM!!
The aircraft in question was from Hunsdon, and the pilot is remembered on the RAF Hunsdon Roll Of Honour.
Wish I had been involved in this !
The Fairey Battle, I would nip back quietly and replace them all with something a bit more capable performance wise, maybe Boston /Havocs. then re-run the ill fated Maastricht raids…
I’m glad I bought mine online when they were first announced…all I have to do is make sure I get there early…I will wager a few queues will form to get in!
I did have the pleasure of meeting and talking with Ted Sismore back in 2008 during filming at Hunsdon for a Canadian documentary. He was an extremely affable and informative man. I’m sure his passing was mentioned on the forum before.
Were a few aircraft scrapped there post war Russ?
A good question, or is it a result of the soil conditions at the location causing a yellow appearance.
Now I do know for a fact that in a barn very near to Hunsdon airfield there are Wellington and Typhoon undercarriage legs. They were bought in post war to be used by a plant hire company as dampeners for graders and earthmoving equipment. The plant company Tylers operated from Nuthampstead, could this be a bit of modified kit and given a coat of Caterpillar® yellow??
What a good find Russ 🙂
Cheers for the update!
Well done to everyone involved, a worthy project has come to fruition!
