On the 31 3 1944 Lancaster II, LL683 from 514 Squadron, force landed in field next to airfield when fuel ran low after many diversions. Returning from the infamous Nuremburg raid, this aircraft was the last one to put down. Pilot W/O W.L McGowan. All crew safe.
There you go:)
Can you make a clear note of all the numbers and marks for us to scrutinize Bill ?
Well it didnt eh? 🙂
Interesting, I found a lot of non wartime aircraft related items at Allens Green in the 1980’s, I think someone broke aircraft up in the 1950’s locally.
With the close proximity of Sawbridgeworth airfield it could be from one of the local crashes known about. Also, The last aircraft down from the ill fated Nuremburg raid, a Lancaster, bellied in in a field close to Allens Green.
Was this found on one of Julian Evan Harts ‘surgical cleansing metal detector rallies’ he held on the airfield site a couple of years ago?
BAPC.73 was indeed at the Queens Head , Allens Green nr Sawbridgeworth. According to Paul Doyle, author of the history of Sawbridgeworth airfield ‘Where the lysanders were‘ it seems to have ended up in New Zealand.
I had a the same dream weekly for over eighteen years.
It involved walking through a small village with stone fronted houses with very small front gardens. The setting is reminiscent of somewhere in the Cotswolds or Wiltshire. I started at the top of the hill on the right hand side and walked down to where the road forked and a railway line crossed the two roads. In the apex of the fork stood a large Mill of some kind.
There were no cars, and no people, but I was able to walk inside both shops and look around. The first shop was at the top of the hill and was a newsagent/sub post office. The second shop was also on the right hand side and was a small convenience shop.
I have not had this dream for over 6 years or so, maybe longer. but I can still see every detail in my minds eye even tonight sat here writing this. I have travelled the length and breadth of this country but have never seen this place before, let alone walked through it.
I wonder if that place really exists and if so, where the hell is it!
*Footnote*
A partner of a friend who dabbles a little in Tarot and other mystical beliefs says that I probably haunt the place in times of deep sleep. She went on to say that although I didnt see anyone in the dream, it wasnt to say that I would not be invisible to certain people living in the village. This would seem that I appear to them as a ghostly image. It is her belief that ghosts are not what we think they are. She is a little like a Stevie Nicks character bless here, a little hippyish and ‘airy fairy’ so I did tend to take her statement with a pich of salt

Nice to see people still visiting Pickard and Broadleys graves at Amiens. Just 25 kilometres away lies the third man lost on the raid that day. St Denis Eglise cemetery at Poix de Picardie is the last resting place of New Zealander Flt Lt Richard Webb Sampson. He is often forgotten or overlooked when it comes to remembrance sadly.
Thanks Creaking Door,
So the tube section is the main spar?…..a clever design and I should imaging quite strong.
Was there another one found in the late 90’s in that area? I seem to remember reading about one sunk by the RAF after the war…
Sad to hear the news of Fred’s passing.
On my twice yearly visits to EK,he was always a nice bloke who would take the time to tell you about what was going on.
Condolences to the Panton Family for whom we owe a great deal.
Thanks Dave, if you do ever find out, please let me know!
I would be interested to know if any of these images were taken at Hunsdon while 488 were there.
The squadron were at Hunsdon from 9th October to 14th november re-equipping with the NF 30 from their Mk12 and Mk13’s before deploying to Amiens
Good luck to all involved.
Does it say it is actually meant to be a bomb they are getting?
Maybe it’s a canister that you can put things in it, like undeveloped film etc?
A similar setup was used with Army cooperation squadrons Lysanders at Sawbridgeworth, I think you are right.
Thanks Andy
