I have to admit to likeing the movie A Matter Of Life And Death. Very far fetched but strangely haunting.

One of the wife & I’s all time favourite films:).

Civil aviation films, then for fun it has to be ‘Airplane’
‘Alive’ for probably the most harrowing film with an aviation background.

For WW2 ‘B of B’ ‘Angels One Five’ Twelve ‘o’ Clock high’ ‘An appointment in london’ ‘Target for Tonight’ all in no particular order.

I was thinking more along the lines of actually on the airfield Richard. Rivenhalls existing memorial is in the pub car park away from the airfield.

The two main points I would like answered by Mr Bannerman are simple.

1)Do you intend to place one of your marker stones on an airfield which has an existing memorial, or one already planned?

    2) Will the ABCT work closely with any Airfield Historical Group, or local history societies, Squadron Associations, Veterans groups, or other interested parties to provide the correct fitting memorial for any such airfield?

Over to you Mr Bannerman, I for one will be extremely interested in what you have to say:).

    Myth?

What part of an actual recorded RAF operation could be construed as a myth?

Investigative journalism has run out of suitable subjects, and turns to historical subjects to feed on methinks.

Why is it policy for many Indian call centres operatives to pretend to have British names?, or be in Britain. A Bank called for my son and first of all asked me about the weather in London, I dont live in london, but near enough I suppose when you are calling from Mumbai or wherever!

This is the gist of a recent call.

Heavily Indian accented man, ‘Hello, I am calling from **** Bank, My name is Derek’.
    Me: ‘Bet it isnt’
Heavily Indian accented man: ‘I can assure you it is’.
Me: ‘whatever, what do you want……Derek’?
Heavily Indian accented man: ‘Are you Mr S****?’
    Me: ‘Yes’.
Heavily Indian accented man: ‘Mr Alec S****?’
    Me: ‘No’
Heavily Indian accented man: ‘Is Mr alec S**** in?’
    Me: ‘No’
Heavily Indian accented man: ‘When will he be in?
Me: He wont, he moved out two years ago’
Heavily Indian accented man: ‘please tell him to phone this Number..0870..’
Me: Sorry to interupt, but that is a premium rate number, give me a proper number’
Heavily Indian accented man: ‘That is the only number we have’
Me: ‘What town are you in?’
Heavily Indian accented man: ‘Err I am in…err Manchester’
    Me: ‘Bet you aint’
Heavily Indian accented man: ‘Yes Manchester’
Me: ‘Well give me a Manchester number to pass on to my son’
Heavily Indian accented man: ‘You must tell him to ring 0870…
Me: ‘I have no pen, hold on’
Me: a as I walk away from the phone somewhat miffed, I said to no one in particular ‘bloody Indian call centres’ I get a pen and picked up the phone, ‘Right, give me that stupid number..
Heavily Indian accented man: ‘What did you call me?
    Me: ‘what’?
Heavily Indian accented man: You called me a name, I wont tolerate racism, this is being recorded, now what did you call me???
Me: ‘Foxtrot Alpha’, and I then put the phone down.

Not had any more so far…Well not from that one at least!

A pilot from my town, Dick Sampson, was killed on the raid.

Dick Sampson gets a mention every year now Dave, Many forget him, being the first killed on the raid, everyone remembers G/C Pickard and Flt Lt Broadley. We set that right since we started to hold a yearly gathering on or around the 18th Feb, at the Hunsdon airfield memorial.

There is also ‘The Gates Burst Open’ by Remy. Published in 1955 by ARCO Publishers at a price of 15 Shillings:)
I have an almost mint copy of this, and often wondered what it is worth now. No ISBN, long before that came in!

This forum can offer a lot in the way of tying up images with building numbers.
Quite a few well versed people frequent the board, and are always willing to help.

If you fancy wading out over Dengie marshes TT, it is quite possible you might find a 60Lb concrete practise warhead for said projectile:) There were quite a few there back in 1980 ish;)

RAF Hunsdon peritrack and Runway remains shows its original asphalt topping in places. This also closed in 1945-6.
I cannot remember seeing an asphalt cap on the nearby former USAAF airfield of Matching, Essex. Was the asphalt cap a means of dulling down the bright concrete against enemy photo-recon in the early part of the war. A practice that didnt really matter too much in 1943-44 with the threat of an invasion over?
