Rate of Climb Indicator
With reference to the Rate of Climb indicator, it would appear to be a post war Smiths 2,000ft/minute range instrument in an SAE case which would make it Smiths Code 20RC/PC or 20RC Sec/Ref: 6A/2086 (listed as 6A/2086 Smiths type 20RC in AL18 AP1086 Section 6A for Devon C1 aircraft and listed in AP1086 Section 6A dated 1966 as 20/RC/PC with the same Sec/Ref 6A/2086) The suffix PC added for Pressure Cabin.
Attached is some Smiths information regarding these RoC indicators.
Not too sure if that helps or has clouded the issue a bit more!

Unidentified Fuselage
Not sure what s/n fuselage this is, but I came across the photo when going through some other bits and pieces.
The photo was taken probably mid-80s when my father was trading Chipmunk spares (K&L Aero) and is in his stores which was is South Lincolnshire. He said that he can’t remember any details on it or the wings, or where they were sold on to either.
Hopefully I’ll find some more to post, just got to find them first.

Brown Brothers Extract
Hi Elliott,
Attached is an extract from Brown Brothers Catalogue No 526 (undated) which shows the type of wood screws you would be looking for. As far as I know the only difference between AGS and commercial is the AGS screws are cadmium plated except for the stainless, but I do stand to be corrected if I am incorrect!!
So probably your best bet would be finding a ‘proper’ hardware store if you want small quantity, or somewhere like Screwfix for larger quantity.
I do have a small amount of csk wood screws, but they are of later pattern with recessed head (SP130 part number series).
Hope that helps
Best regards
Dave

I do remember having this Chipmunk in the back garden of our house when my father had his stores at home in Lincolnshire!
He traded for a long time as K&L Aero Services and it wasn’t unusual to various bits of Chipmunk/Government Surplus of all nationalities gracing the garden/drive.
I will check with him when I see him tomorrow, but as far as I can remember it was reduced to produce on site in the garden!! I don’t think there are any pictures of the aircraft when we had it, although I will check that too.
Hope this is of interest.

Post #22: Dunlop Maxaret Unit installation…….many happy memories of overhauling these and setting the valves up on the test rig…….pneumatic ones tho, I suspect the Lightning is hydraulic??

Would probably be worth having a look around the Defence Estates website:
http://www.defence-estates.mod.uk/index.php
or contacting them through their ‘Built Estate and Heritage’ section

Hi Martin,
There is no manufacturer’s p/n listed against 6A/942 but there are the following manufacturer’s listed for spares for the Mk1B* RoC, they are: Kelvin,Bottomley and Baird: Korrect Depth Gauge Co and Smith’s Aircraft Instruments Ltd.
The spares listed are mainly bezels and glasses with more listed for the Smiths item than the others.
The info is taken from AP1086 Vocabulary of RAF Equipment, Book 7 Section 6A, Aircraft engine and flying instruments, accessories and unit servicing spares dated 1950. Another copy of section 6A I have dated 1966 does not list the item.

Dave
