B17 or B 24
Dave
I never heard bullets hitting the plane. However, I could hear and/or feel flak hitting the plane, Once a plane directly in front of me exploded, we went through the debris 1/2 second later, I could hear debris hitting our plane.
Going through flak just made the adrealin get higher, Just hoped that we got through it in one piece. I concentrated on my job.
XR,
I love snow—————–when I see it on TV
Rich,
Miss Angela might have been a Generals personal plane. Unbelievable what some of them did to their personal plnes at taxpayers expense
Hello to my friends in UK and down under, its been awhile since I visited.
The past 11 days I had my annual shot in the arm. The Collings B17, B24 and B 25 were at 3 airports in my vcinity. I had a great time at the B17 answering questions and meeting people. However, I paid a price, I got sunburned and still have a very sore lip due to sun poisoning. It’s the price I pay to have a good time.
My picture was taken in 1942, before I flew in B17s.
If anyone has questions about the B17 I might have an answer.
I have a nice picture of me taken in 1943 as a 22 year old pilot in front of a B17 that I flew. But I dont know how to get it on the website.

Too bad the plane doesn’t tour Florida. Several years ago I was invited to have a ride in the plane while she was enroute to Kitty Hawk, NC
B17, B24 and B25
Any of you plane lovers in the US or UK, the collings Foundation B17, B24 and B25 will be in Ft Lauderdale, FL for 3 days then Pompano Beach Airport for 3 days then to Boca Raton for 4 days, starting Feb17 until Feb 28. They offer 1/2 hour rides and/or walkthroughs of the aircraft.
If anyone does come to visit, look for me at the exit door of the B17, stop by and say hello.
I think the title of the film was The flight of the Phoenix. I saw it many years ago
B17
Don’t forget the B17. There are still some flyables
B17
I flew B17s from N.Africa and Italy from July 1943 to Feb 1944. However. I can’t say that I enjoyed the scenery

Pete,
Dec 6 was on a Sunday. I was with a group of young people, when news of Pearl Harbor came over the radio, I just tuned out and was thinking about enlisting. Monday AM I went and enlisted, I was afraid that the war would be over before I would be able to get much flying under my belt. After getting my parents consent I was appointed an aviation cadet, and eventually I flew.
If you compare the rates for some modern rentals its not a high price, for example an hour in a Squirrel helicopter up here in Scotland is around 800 pounds and dearer down South.Which is why I avoid chartering a heli for my photo work and where possible use a Cessna.
What does the Collings Foundation charge for the B17 and 24 flights?
Sadly like many I missed the chance of a Concorde flight because I wrongly assumed that it would still be active now.
On my short list is a Dragon Rapide from Duxford.
As of last Feb in Ft Lauderdale and Boca Raton FL, the Collings B17 and B24 costs $400 for a 1/2 hour ride. I have yet to find anyone who says that it wasn’t worth the price
Charley,
from my diary, I will tell you of my visit to Corsica;
We were aware of 3 airfields in Corsica for emergencies, Ajaccio, in the South west, Ghissannio, north east and Calvi in the north west.
On Feb 4, 1944 our target was Toulon Harbor/sub base We ran into headwinds flying at 25000 ft that were over 100 mph,(jet stream, unknown at the time) we were over an hour late getting to the target, estimate 15 planes of the groups turned back because of low fuel. After bombs away, after losing 2 planes and encountering heavy flak, we decided to head for Ajaccio, Corsica to refuel. We had severe turbulance because the field was in the midst of mountains. It was chaotic, because 35-40 planes trying to land at once with no semblance of a traffic pattern, every plane was very low on fuel. We had to spend the night around the plane, waiting for morning to get refueled. I finally took off at 1415, I was one of the last to leave. Two more planes never returned to base, don’t know what happened to them
