He hit a ‘Distance to run’ board, a lightweight frangible marker placed every 1,000 feet either side of the runway. You can see the rear of the one this side of the runway (black square approx 5ftx5ft) They are made for this sort of impact. Made from aluminum and perspex and have a habit of destroying themselves in very strong winds.
I thought the only piece of K5054 to survive was a bolt(?) fashioned into a hammer by a Supermarine engineer and currently on show at the Southampton museum?
