He hit a ‘Distance to run’ board, a lightweight frangible marker placed every 1,000 feet either side of the runway. You can see the rear of the one this side of the runway (black square approx 5ftx5ft) They are made for this sort of impact. Made from aluminum and perspex and have a habit of destroying themselves in very strong winds.
