A few piccies from my last visit to Binbrook – mid nineties for a Lightning Assocation rally. The last picture is of me and my car and yes I did drive from Cambridge to Binbrook and back in a 30 year old car on L plates!
I don’t know if anyone can answer this question but, anyone got any idea which type of aircraft the section on top of Viscount fuselarge XT575 is from ( in previous post )? Also this tail section of a Phantom was in the yard, any idea were it came from and which aircraft?
Morning Scott,
I was at work when I posted that so I can now give you what my notes say :
XP706 : Last Flight 07/85 , Stored , Moved to decoy area 09/87 , Removed by Lincolnshire Lightning Preservation Society 20/12/87 ( towed by tractor to Strubby Airfield ) , ? Purchased by John Jennings and moved to Bomber Country Aviation Museum, Hemswell , 19/11/02 moved to Aeroventure, Doncaster after purchase by Scott Clayton ( Whoever he maybe 😉 ).
Hope this helps.
By heck, it worked!!

This thread cannot die! Gives me an excuse to try out attaching some photo’s anyway. Here goes..
The following photo’s were all taken at Hanningfield Metals around the mid-nineties. A friendly bunch of chaps who would always let you have a wonder round.
Hi All
Spiteful 14 do you have any more of the aircraft that had been put out to grass at that time. My Lightning had not flown since 1985 so it would have been around the palce somewhere.
Scott C
At the time of that photograph XP706 would still have been inside. The aircraft in the photo are XM18? (1 or 3 ) / XS418 / XS449 / XS450 / XS454 of the top of my head. Yours wasn’t moved outside until after these had been scrapped during 1987.
WOW a real life Lightning legend on here!
Walter, any truth in the story that you did a few extra circuits because you were having such a good time! 😀
If anyone’s interested I can confirm that she’s in Marshalls for a repaint.
I wasn’t there but I still mourn there passing. 🙁
There have been various articules in my local rag about Mildenhall and I think the general opinon is it will never happen again. This years open day for the locals has been cancelled due to commitments. I think apart from operational reasons the main issue is car parking, it will all have to be of base in the future following 9/11 and there just isn’t the room to accomodate the amount of expected visitors. Of course it’s late and I’m writing this trying to remember what I’ve read so I could be wrong!
Martin, that shot of J4205 against the snowey mountain is Awesome. 😎
Wrecks and Relics has her as being put up for tender at Winterbourne Gunner ( Nuclear, Bacteriological and Chemical Defence Centre ) and scrapped by July 1985. If you find the nail it will probably glow. 😉
I see in the paper tonight there’s a big 2 day car show on at Shuttleworth, Old Warden Park as well this weekend. That should make the traffic interesting! Especially if a couple of those old classics go sick on the way in / out.
I’m seeing the pictures! No X’s for me. 🙂
Does formation week last until this Sunday? Might pop down and take a look.
