Yep, I’ll help. Not got much cash but I’ve got my muscle and my brain ( eer, thats not alot then 😀 ).
Of the four projects listed the Lyneham Comet is probably the most pressing. Although it would be a big project needing a bit of co-ordination of people over the country. The stripping and painting of an airframe would probably be the easiest to organise and to get people all in one place at the same time. We could have a regional competition to get the best finnish 😀
I’m with you on this, put my name down. All of those projects seem like a good idea. Anyone else?
Sorry Albert, I’m doing this from the old grey matter at work 😮
Indeed 4 FTS would compliment the Gnat but I think the aero team colours would get more bookings, not that thats neccessarily a good reason!
WELL DONE DELTA JETS 😀
My personal favourite colour scheme is silver with a yellow band, having said that I think the Blue Diamonds scheme would complement XV318 very well. You could have XV318 ( Black Arrows ), XL577 ( Blue Diamonds ), Gnat XS101 ( Yellow Jacks ) all in formation with perhaps G-PSST to show how its done know. I’m sure that would get a few bookings for next year, could even repaint there other Gnat in Red Arrows colours.
Exactly my point Peter. We should be having a discussion about what we can do to save any parts and if anyone knows of any future plans put in place with the aircraft rather than just bitching about there condition.
Sorry about the Lanc bit, just putting across my point. 🙂
On the subject of Lancs being scrapped I had a chat with a bloke today who said that one of his saddest memories was having to scrap a Lanc called ‘Empress of Russia’ at Cranwell. If only we could have been more constructive back then.
It is better to try and fail than not to try at all.
If we take the negative look of the way this thread has gone then why don’t we take it through to it’s conclusion. The fuel we use for these planes we like so much isn’t going to be around that much longer so why try and get some of these planes airbourne ( I’m not talking about Vulcans here by the way ) there only going to be grounded in the end. Then if we try and preserve a bit of all our heritage for many, many, many years to come were going to run out of room. So there will have to be a cull and yes it will include Spitfires, Lancs etc. Thinking like this achieves nothing.
The reason we preserve these aircraft is for our own enjoyment so lets just enjoy them while we have them and not give out negative thoughts to the people trying in there spare time to keep them here. Lets offer some constructive thoughts like, can we do anything to save it, can we get a plan together so when it comes to dismantling it we make sure all the usuable parts go to a good home and the scrap perhaps gets recycled into keyrings or something that the museum can sell to raise funds. I always think its better to be constructive rather than taking the easy option of knocking volunteers.
Thanks for the info guys 🙂
Will definatly go next year.
How do you find out about these open days? They dont seem to be advertised and I gave up on there web page as it doesn’t seem to get updated.
Mpacha, glad to hear you get your hands dirty 🙂
My main issue really is that the people who look after these aircraft are all volunteers who give up valuable spare time. The last thing they need as a reward for there efforts is negative publicity about there efforts. We all know that aircraft deteriorate outside. I think what we should be encouraging is people to go along and give a hand.
No problem JINX. The last time I visited your museum all the aircraft were well presented or being worked on. Seem’s people are very quick to criticize but not so quick to get there hands dirty.
Blimey the way some of you lot are talking makes you wonder why they bother. 🙁
I would like a behind the scene’s day with one of the jet operators ( or all of them 😀 ) . The day would start with a guided tour of the operation and the aircraft, including information on maintenance and what is required. Then several talks from people involved with the operation – MD, maintenance chief, pilot etc. Followed by some brief refreshments and then a walk out onto the flightline to be talked through the preparation of an aircraft for flight while they do it – then a display by one or two aircraft. That to me would be better than most air displays. I would pay 30-60 pound for that.
😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
Thanks Glen I guess I must have missed it when I looked at the site 😮
I take it then as the rear gate is know closed if want to visit AV8 its a case of turn up at the main gate, state your intentions, then follow the perimeter track around the inside – observe the runway traffic lights – then round to AV8. I only ask as not being a pilot or having any immediate connection with aviation ( other than as an enthusiast ) I tend to find that access to air side is normally frowned upon at most airfields for us oiks 🙂
