BTW Most Air to Air Kills are a BVR and that trend has only increased as time goes on……….I know of only a couple gun kills in the IAF since the 1980’s. So, you going to have to provide a source for 90%!:stupid:
BVR kills against what? MiG-21 using AMRAAM? It could work on MiG-21, doesn’t mean it could work on Su-27.
And JF-17 can also go past Mach 1.8. Doesn’t mean it’s one of the best out there.
Looking elegant hardly wins races. Plus, as long as you bring up top speed. Do you really think a Super Hornet loaded with External Fuel Tanks and Weapons is faster than a F-35. Which, carry’s them internally! In fact in the real work the Super Hornet is slower than the F-35.
And internal weapons bays present more chance of malfunction.
Nonetheless, even such notable Air Superiority Fighters like the F-14 and F-15 rarely exceeded Mach 1.2 in Combat. Especially, when carrying external stores. The F-35 could easily beat either one in an Air to Air Configuration.
F-35 has a monster 40,000 lb thrust engine, but it carries too much fuel and is too heavy to fly past Mach 1.6. F-15 can sprint at Mach 2.5 for short periods of time, which could mean the difference between life and death in dogfights. Israeli fighter pilots say over 90% of their fights are dogfights with gun. This is because long range air to air missiles, no matter how good, rarely hits. During Kosovo, a single Serbian MiG-29 dodged 6 AMRAAMs in succession.
There is a lot of doubt that the Typhoon would be a better choice for Canada. As it works most closely with the US and the vastly majority of it’s Allies will operate the F-35 not the Typhoon. Plus, the latter can’t match the former in Situational Awareness or Stealth.
The more complex are the systems, the more prone to system malfunction. F-35’s stealth is not proven. Who knows if in real combat it would make much difference. Boeing claims there is no essential difference in radar signature between F-35 and Super Hornet.
There is no doubt that Typhoon is the best choice in terms of servicing Canada’s legitimate requirements, with Rafale a close second. If there is budget pressure then Gripen E/F makes a reasonable substitute. F-35 and SH don’t even rate a mention until you start bringing in extraneous nonsense such as NATO.
IMO Gripen E/F is not a good choice for Canada. Sweden is simply too small a country with population under 10 million. I think Typhoon or Super Hornet or F-35. IMO Canada being a big country should have a two engined plane, not a single engined plane.
A few more Super Hornets vs F-35 is hardly a bargain. So, in 1944 would you want 79 Wildcats or 65 Hellcats????
F4F top speed 331 mph. F6F top speed 380 mph. Both from Grumman. Super Hornet and F-35 are not from the same company. Super Hornet top speed Mach 1.8+. F-35 top speed Mach 1.6+. IMO Super Hornet looks more elegant than F-35 despite being a much older design.
I’m fairly sure the stated length of JF-17 includes pitot tube and the stated width of JF-17 includes wingtip missiles. JF-17 and JAS-39 have pretty much the same length and width, having built around very similar sized engines.
Oh BTW, Golden Eagle doesn’t have DSI plus it’s not even a multi role combat aircraft.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that Super Hornet is essentially a totally different plane compared to Hornet? It’s supposed to be 95% different in parts?
The KLJ-7 radar weighs <120kg, PS05 weighs 153kg.

Weighs less could mean having newer processor and materials that reduce weight. JF-17 and JAS-39 are about the same size, their radars should have similar dimensions. I noticed on page 1 JF-17 has much lower empty weight compared to JAS-39. Part of them is no doubt due to DSI. Could JF-17 also use a lot more composite materials than JAS-39 that reduce weight?
IMO JF-17 looks better in PAF painting. Chinese painting has never been top notch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPVVRcwcZ9Q
Wait a minute…
But F35 got DSI, while Typhoon doesn’t…
Good point. F-35 is a much newer design than Typhoon.
In numbers the JF 17, in money the Gripen. And the reasons are simple.
The JF17 is more like a modern F5. It has sub standard fighter radar (ie smaller than the Gripens), it has sub standard flight performance (compared to Gripen and F16), the weapons are not as good (SD10 vs Aim120 and Meteor for BVR) etc.
But will it get the job done? Yes, unless you expect A2A focus against capable adversaries.
Where do you get Thunder’s KLJ-7 radar is smaller than Griffin’s PS-05 radar?
Awesome plane! Love it.
Now I know why the PLAAF went for the J-20 instead of the J-31, the J-31 looks too much like the F-22, plus the J-31 does not have the range that the J-20 has.
Actually, J-20 is the replacement for J-11 while J-31 is the replacement for J-10. J-20 is F-22 size class, with two large engines. J-31 is F-35 size class, with two small engines rather than 1 large engine. J-20 and J-31 are both getting inducted, just as WZ-10 and WZ-19 were both inducted.
I’m surprised America got past Chinese pressure and is selling AH-64 to Taiwan 😀 Nevertheless AH-64 is inferior to Changhe WZ-10 and Harbin WZ-19 😀
Russia won’t sell to Taiwan. China shares border with Siberia where Russians don’t live and has 10 times the population as Russia. China is Russia’s attack dog against ‘Murica.
