Difficult question I think.
I would imagine that there’s more than a nod to Police in this, after recent killings of officers on duty.
I know the killing of the two PC’s in Manchester by Dale Cregan caused a lot of upset in not only Manchester but in other forces too.
It seems to me in this case at least that life in prison isn’t sufficient, and if I ran the country he’d have had a short walk in conjunction with a piece of rope, although quite a few miscreants would go that way.
So, I suppose my view is that punishments should be more harsh, not less.

Yes, I did realise that.
It seems that it’s similar to what you get in many cases here, some modern tourism ‘expert’ with little or no knowledge of history drawing lines on a map, or re-writing history in a convenient and easy way for the masses to grasp, to help make money out of history.
Many French people seemingly don’t approve either.

My impression is that the French never forgave the British for carrying on the fight after they had been conquered.

Both countries had under-spent on the military since 1918–and paid the price.
And there were plenty of potential collaborators here, most of the middle and upper classes were suggesting that we opened ‘negotiations’ with Hitler at that time. After all, he was seen by the moneyied as a bulwark against that nice Mr Stalin, and a workers paradise.
The collective hindsight that many demonstrated is a wonderful thing.

I used to know a guy who was in the resistance, he ended up in a little place called Dachau.

I could also rumble on about Verdun, Artois, Notre Dame de Lorrette, Gallipoli, oh and slightly later Bir Hakeim and a load of other places–but it would be a complete waste of time–like casting pearls before swine.

I’ve spent a lot of time amongst the French, it’s better than here.
It’s not perfect by any means, but this country is dead–full of f*ckwits, wannabe’s and hangers on, the indolent, people who think the Daily Mail is real, and people who can’t cook, or wipe their own ar*e most likely.

Whenever I write anything now–even my little asides for the SVAS journal, I try to view them as I think he would–somewhat dimly I imagine.

Sadly to me at least, The Collection used to have an annual schools day, this was eventually abandoned because of a lack of interest by schools.
Teachers sitting about on the grass, no doubt pouring scorn on the efforts of engineers and brave men while pushing some pseudo Trotskyist agenda or other seemed to be where it ended up.
Sadly also, and it’s probably a largely unfashionable view in the modern World, I reckon you can’t teach anyone very much, if don’t know much yourself.
But then again, I know nothing.

Well the liver and bacon casserole is in the old cast iron caserole dish marinating.
We have to eat early tonight because we’re going to a quiz night.

I find cooking a really good diversion from the rest of my life.
I can easily eat, sleep and drink motors and engines if you know what I mean. I think I’m obsessive to be honest.
Cooking is good for the soul and clears my head.

I have a large lump of venison in the freezer and did consider that for tonight, but I think that deserves more attention.
