I’m white working class, but a load of middle class grammar school boys in donkey jackets selling the Socialist Worker never represented me or my own.

As to French bashing – I just feel it is inappropriate and an unfair generalisation. I spent some while in France recently researching cases where ordinary French folk put themselves, and their families and communities, at extraordinary personal risk to hide and smuggle back to the UK downed RAF fliers. In one case, an RAF fighter pilot had left his cigarette lighter with the farmer who sheltered him and helped his return to the UK. The Germans had suspicions, and searched his farmhouse. The lighter was found (engraved with the pilot’s name) and the hapless farmer was sent to a Concentration camp. He was seen in the camp when it was liberated by the Russians, but died shortly afterwards and was never seen again. Just one story amongst many about the dastardly, back-stabbing and dis-loyal French. And this was just under forty years before the Falklands War.

Actually CD, I was thinking earlier what an inspired use of naval power the sinking of the Belgrano was–absolutley textbook stuff.
If HMS Conqueror had been down there a bit earlier we may well have a re-run of 1977.
As it was, the Argentinian navy stayed home once they realised she was about.

Prior to the invasion I very much doubt that there would have been more than token resistance in the UK towards handing over the Falklands, either totally or on a shared basis.

I doubt the average Brit knew any more about them than they do the Caicos Islands now.
I knew people who thought they were off Scotland somewhere.
I only knew anything about the Falklands because of the big naval battle there in 1914.

I agree up to a point. The FO were I think quite keen for a negotiated settlement and were briefing as such in Buenos Aires.
The MOD must have had some knowledge because HMS Endurance–scheduled for withdrawal came under their remit.
I think the signals coming from Britain pre-invasion were those of a negotiated settlement–possibly quite soon.
