Alan, insurance is a gamble. For nearly 60 yrs I had cats that insurance would not cover let alone pay out. Did I save money by not having insurance? Who is to know?

    :

It is tricky I know. We have never actively gone out to get a cat, they decide they want to come and live with us.
People who used to live next door belonged to the CPL. They must have had about 20 cats in their place at one time,
some living in cages in the garden. Two of them decide they wanted to live with us.
Anyway the people split up and moved, leaving the two cats with us. We had them for a long time before one got ill and died fairly quickly. The other one had a thyroid problem and cost us a fortune at the vet. I eventually had to have him put to sleep,.
Just before that, another cat moved in, it was outside our back door in the freezing cold and snow. He’s been with us for about five years now.
Just before Easter this year he had an accident, a dislocated hip etc, which cost over £1,000 in vets fees. Then back in September he managed to break some bones in his lower leg. This time it cost over £2,000 🙁

Reading up on insurance, some companies are better than others. Best to avoid the ones offered by supermarkets apparently.

It goes without saying that there are some secrets which need to be kept, for whatever reason.
Friends of ours who work for a company involved in the manufacture of items for the space industry, have to
sign a letter of confidentiality, and don’t even talk to us about what they do.

This video of a Ch.4 programme, sums up a lot of the absurdity surrounding secrecy.

Not reading anything at the moment, but am waiting for a copy of “Fly for your life” (Stanford Tuck’s bio) to be delivered.
To replace a copy which was loaned to a cousin and never returned many years ago.

“….He was told he couldn’t be admitted as a single man….”

I would have though that in itself was illegal ?, as it would need to apply to women as well.

    How utterly stupid.

But in the same way that there used to be women who were unknowingly married to closeted gay men, known as ‘beards’, might not some adults come in with their own children to camouflage their intentions?

Ok, how about not admitting children ?

……..Likewise, you are ignoring a lot of history if you think that women are incapable of cruelty towards children, extending as far as paedophile acts.

Yes I think the figure is roughly 50/50 men/women. Maybe why they are not allowing single women either.

You would have thought though, that all children would be supervised. Either by parents or school teachers ?
Perhaps they should have said that children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. There couldn’t
have been any argument with that. Except from those maybe, that allow their little darlings to run riot and
annoy everyone else apart from them.

…it does – as already mentioned – which was why I didn’t put ‘single man’ in the title.

So, does anyone know of other sites that apply such rules?

Yes I saw that, once I read the article, rather than the original quote 🙂

I find it fascinating, just to think that we have the people with the brains to work out how to put the lander on the comet
at that distance. Especially considering that it left Earth ten years ago.
Just think how technology has come on in that time.

Mankind is naturally curious, we want to know where we came from, and where we are going. It also creates a lot of jobs,
including friends of ours who have worked on the CCDs on board the lander.

My only question is : If the lander is not secured firmly to the surface and only weighs the equivalent of one gram,
how is it going to drill into the surface of the comet ?

Just finished reading Larry Forrester’s book on Stanford Tuck.
I first read this back in the late 60’s. It forgotten about his relationship with Roger Bushell,
and how close he was to being one of those shot after the Great Escape

I think I will now re read Ginger Lacey, Fighter Pilot

I can see our local Sainsburys when I look out of our front window. Although we haven’t done our main shopping there
for a few years now, preferring Lidl.
We can drive a mile and a half to Lidl, do our shopping and be home again, in the time it would take to get through
    the checkout at Sainsburys.

I haven’t watch the complete video yet, but am surprised that some find it in bad taste.
