The army seem to have taken over so many of our RAF bases, but I wonder if we have enough of an army left to
    take over Mildenhall ?

Apparently the MoD have said that Mildenhall could continue as a military base.

    Watch this space.

Thanks Adrian. I found it on the map, and it does show one big house at the end of a drive.
Of course that may have no connection, as I don’t know it’s age.

I just wondered if there were aircraft at Shudy or not, or if such a place as RAF Shudy existed.
If not, I was wondering about accommodation, or if there was an officers mess there ?

My late mother was there for a while, when it was RAF. Then she moved on to Castle Camps.
While at Debden, she was lucky enough to see Glenn Miller perform.

Finally, in this musical interlude, I was amused to hear Georgie Fame reel off a list of British USAF bases he used to tour in the Sixties as part a musical monologue he sings in his current touring show. He always describes the US servicemen who used to come into Soho’s Flamingo Club to hear him as ‘G.I’s’ but I think they were mainly Air Force.

Talking of music…. Who can remember the Sid Lawrence Band, playing their Glen Miller numbers in the opened up nose
    of a C-5 ?
I think that must have been the Bi-Centennial commemoration year ? Not sure if that was also the year it took four
hours to get out of the car park, when the main gate flooded after a downpour.

I can’t recall which air fete it was, but we voted the Navy stall as the one with the foxiest wives and girlfriends serving the food.

    That a good enough mention?

    Ok, just about 🙂

I remember talking to a member of the special forces unit, at an Air Fete.
They had not long moved to Mildenhall from Alconbury. They weren’t that happy about the move.
They kept themselves to themselves, and had the run of the place at Alconbury.

We had a guided tour of their facility a few years ago, on a base tour. They certainly have a lot of
equipment. A very “gung ho” bunch too.

The based King Air aircraft left about 10 years ago

Ahhh, thanks. Was that all they had ?

Nobody has mentioned the US Navy facility at Mildenhall. If it’s still there, will that move to Lakenheath ?

Thinking about this. If all of the aircraft were under cover, Duxford could look a fairly forlorn place on a wet day with
    nothing outside to look at.

I also wonder how many “non aviation enthusiasts” have been tempted into visiting Duxford, after seeing aircraft
when driving past on the M11 ?

    Just a thought.

You have to wonder. If the people at Duxford who make the decisions, could go back in time.
Would they have still have civilian airliners on the airfield ?

was fantastic to see the B-1, B-52, A-10 and many others for the first time up close and up in the air where they belong making plenty of smoke and noise! 😀

Not forgetting the smell. Getting off the Park & Ride from Lakenheath and getting a whiff of BBQ smoke mixed in with jet exhaust.

    It smelt like…………………………… Victory 🙂
