It seems strange driving past the airport now, sort of empty. Despite the airbuses coming and going.
The memories will stay for ever.
It’s been pretty quiet on here for a few days.
Youtube has some Southport videos.
I agree that 7yrs old is a bit young. I’d have a word with his school first.
It all seems like a distant memory now :apologetic:
I hope they have some decent coverage on TV.
Although I expect it will be well covered by the people making the documentary ?
In another of my hobbies their are two magazines, and I have at one time or another subscribed to both.
I now subscribe to neither of them, and save myself £30+ a year. They were just full of adverts, and reviews of
the latest products. The reviews always giving glowing reports.
I used to buy FP many years ago, but as the price went up and up, I decided I could do without it.
Alan, that may have been a “Power Egg” which is a fully dressed engine with all the components previously installed, you used to be able to get them complete for various aircraft with cowls, bearers and even in some cases the prop fitted, you simply plumbed the whole lot to the aircraft in one big lump, thus saving down time 🙂
you will see some examples here

Yes, that would make sense……thanks
Derwent Dam flypast – two Lancasters. SO many people wanted to see this!

Quote...”“Before the day, we’d like to remind people that there are limited parking spaces in the area. We’ve made arrangements for approximately 500 cars to be accommodated in our car parks and we’ve also organised additional spaces for a few hundred cars on the roadside…”
I wonder if that will be enough spaces ?
Alan – there were no marquees at the Autumn shows, no enclosures and a very reduced number of trade stalls. There were always visiting aircraft in the programme including the Belgian and/or Dutch F16 notably. The flying programme started at 1.30 and ended at 4.30 I seem to recall.
My memory only goes back to one I went to, around 25yrs ago. My abiding memory is of parking marshalls getting us parked.
When it was time to leave there were none to be seen. With endless queues of cars trying to funnel through one small gate.
Is it Location, Location, Location?
Ease of access.
no corporate tents on the flightline
of course participants
an ideal price to get in
Price per car
Price per occupant
………etc..
Cant add much to that, other than a north facing flightline.
Price per car or occupant ? Tricky one that, depending if you have the opportunity to take someone else or not.
As well as how much they are charging.
Plenty of car parks, with multiple entrances and exits. With marshalls at the end of the show, rather than just at the start.
I agree about stepladders as well as windbreaks, picnic tables etc.
As to actual location ?, again tricky. With an active base, it’s unlikely any would tick all of the boxes.
Or more to the point, I doubt the organizers would want to tick all of the boxes.
………One of the issues with the single day shows was the cost of setting up the supporting infrastructure – marquees, traffic control, security and other facilities…………
As I recall, the Autumn air day, was only for aircraft based at Duxford ?
They could run a show without all of the marquees, and private viewing areas on the flightline. With any trade vehicles
back near the hangars. Just guarantee that as many of the resident aircraft will fly as is possible. They would still make
their money on the entrance tickets, food and trade concessions.
You could still make it a two day event. How about a Friday and Saturday ?, to give people who are on holiday more
of a chance of seeing some flying.
Lots of people manage to get to airshows held on days other than Saturday and Sunday.
Clacton- Eastbourne- Channel Islands- for instance.
You could drop her at a bus stop into Cambridge. She’d be happy all day!!;)
Trouble is, she’d want me to be with her. Knowing I was having a miserable time 🙁
I’ll be on Ginkel heath on Saturday for the para drop and in the Oosterbeek cemetery on Sunday for the commemorative service. I defy any man not to be moved by the hundreds of Dutch school children placing flowers on the graves.
We were there a week before the 50th Anniversary in 1994, a lovely setting. A very hot day if I remember correctly
when we visited the nearby Hartenstein Airborne Museum .
Re: M&S, you may already be aware but there’s a pretty good one at the petrol station further down the A505 on the other side of the M11, next to the McDonald’s…………..
No good unless they have a selection of ladies clothes, enough to keep my other half entertained for a few hours 🙂
I don’t see how they can improve access, given the location. I also don’t see anyone spending £millions to improve access to a venue which only has problems a couple of times a year.
Also, the museum pays a lot of money to those whose job it is, to maximise profits from airshows/events.
One of the reasons large sections of the flightline are out of bounds to the general public.
What’s needed is a mega branch of Marks and Spencer next to the Citroen garage. That would make my wife more than happy :eagerness:
