There’s a very nice Fireflash in the Combined Military Services Museum at Maldon..

Went there a few years ago, they have excellent displays. I would have spent a lot longer there, but had the wife with me 🙂

August 12th 1944. Target, V1 site at Mimoyecques. PB4Y-1 (ex USAAF B-24 J 42- 110007). The single US Navy BQ-8 took off from Fersfield, heading towards Southwold. At an altitude of 2000ft it prematurely detonated over Blyth estuary Suffolk, killing LT Joseph P Kennedy Jr and L T Wilford J Willy. Kennedy’s body was never found.

I seem to remember seeing one of the bomb doors in Parham Aviation Museum. One of the few pieces of any size which
was found. I also remember seeing the incident portrayed in a TV film, many years ago.

The last thing I would say, is the most important point, this behaviour does take money out of the coffers of duxford, a place I am sure we all want to see thrive.

You make a lot of valid points, and as a metal detectorist, I and many others, rely on the goodwill of landowners.

However, I doubt that a handful of people either unwilling or unable to pay to get into an airshow, is really going to
eat into the finances of the IWM.

Landowners/owners should be
advised that they have a liability to protect the public from obvious and anticipated
risks at public events, and, in the event of an accident, they could be held liable for
injuries to spectators on the property. It is advised that professional legal advice on
such notification is taken prior to action.

That would make an interesting court case.
