Lovely memorial, and very sobering to look at that list of airmen who were lost.
As I think I mentioned once before. I used to camping there with my parents, in the late 50’s early 60’s
Back then, the runway was still there.
I also seem to remember there were a couple of ponds we used to fish in.
From an airship ?
If I may revive this thread from last year
I wonder if anyone knows where the Cockpit and propeller ended up ?
Regarding the propeller I had donated and the claim that they couldn’t get
funding to mount it, I have since learnt that this was not true.
Apparently it had at one time been mounted, then at a later date
taken down again
There was also a question as to the legality of actually selling the cockpit.
As technically, it would still have been the property of the RAF.
Although this argument could be a little ambiguous.
I still find all this very sad, and not something 1476 SQDN Rayleigh ATC should be proud of.
Nice pictures. Lets hope they have an incident free season.
Not sure if this should be under Historic or Modern —Anyway a F4 Luftwaffe Phantom will be on static display at this years RIAT .
I assume that the only reason it’s not flying in the display, is because the pilot
isn’t a display pilot ?
What links the site with (once) molten metal to a crash on the date you mention?
I have double checked; nothing that I can find. However, that does not rule out other unrelated aircraft losses.
We need some more clues.
Latest I have is: “……We were on the beach south of Chivelstone, the whole place was littered with it…..”
Thing is, in that area there would no doubt be a lot of debris from WWII,
other than from crashed aircraft.
Perhaps Bob Hoover was flying it ?
Unbelievable — the Turkish president confirms that it’s routine for Turkish pilots to violate other countries’ borders.
Perish the thought that any country would do such a thing
Must be about the time we were there. Had a nice boat trip out on the retired Lifeboat.
One I had first seen back in the early 60’s when it was stationed near St Davids in S.Wales.
Thanks for the other info.
Dupe

It’s a rather tenuous link unfortunately
Quote from other site : “Went looking for gold yesterday and all i came up with was a load of melted duralumin from a downed Focke-Wulf 190 from 1943.

The info on the website “seems” to suggest that one aircraft came down on land ?
So until the person gets back to me, I can’t get any more details regarding location. It could just be that he found what he assumed were aircraft remains and found this particular website, then put two and two together ?
Jetflap @95.
You should try driving in Lincs. all drivers drive at 40 MPH whatever the speed limit, and God help you if it’s on a Sunday when you get behind some old git in a high performance car doing 40. Like a Jaguar, which seems to be a favorite of most.
I was behind a driver this morning, we were doing 35mph coming up to a 40mph speed camera, and he put his brakes on.

BTW I am just back from Aldi where some twonk nipped into the fish and chip shop next door and parked in the last disabled bay without a blue badge.
He should have know that you can only do that if you are driving a BMW or 4×4 Tonka Toy 😀
