any news on his plans for a small museum?
The wheels are in motion and the plans have been submitted… I think we should see some progress over the coming months.
NII_VVS – I’m in regular contact with Mr Cooper… Please check your PM’s.
On AIX there is a topic regarding scapampton and the possibility of the BBMF and the reds to move in together.
Seeing as conningsby is full of typhoons and will be for some time it would make sense for the BBMF to go to a quiter location along with the reds
Also TVOC are looking for a opperating base as brunti is not ideal to opperate her from and the runways heavily used for car testing and could be in a better state.
So why not bring all 3 together at scampton?
Its a fantastic idea and makes perfect sense, but I cant see it happening. It has been talked about time and time again. I had hoped (and still do hope) that the recent work being carried out on hangar 2 at Scampton was to house either the BBMF or the Vulcan, but given that only a few weeks ago we were being told that Scampton will close, I dont think we’re like to see any u turn in the near future… I think we’ll need a change at the top before that happens!
What on earth are you talking about? So, all the good people who frequent this forum and others like it who spend their time and effort and no little money on erecting Memorials to various crews etc. are wasting their time because having two makes one “nul and void”? What few? Which few? Are you even aware that 55,000 Bomber Command aircrew were killed? How can you ever have enough Memorials to repay the massive debt we owe. I would venture to suggest that Just Jane is as much of a Memorial to the crews of Bomber Command as PA474, possibly even more so in many respects. A Veteran seeing PA474 in flight can be reduced to tears, it is an amazing sight. But have you ever been to EK and seen the emotions flood out of a Veteran who has just been back aboard? Or who has just watched the re-enactors standing around the aircraft just before it starts up for an evening taxi run? Ever seen them open up and start sharing memories which have been locked away for the last 65 years?
Two Typhoon pilots were shot down and a member here did an incredible amount of research into their deaths. They are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial to the Missing as they were shot down into the sea. The forumite continued his research and arranged for, and erected a Memorial to these two young pilots on the very farm on which one grew up. He bought the brother of the one pilot and the sister of the other together for the unveiling, he arranged a flypast by Jaguars from Coltishall and over 100 people attended the unveiling and Service of Dedication. Their names were Johnny Wiseman and Alan ‘Babe’ Haddon of 609 Squadron and they were killed on the 14th of February 1943. Try doing a forum search for their names to see what he achieved.
Of course, by your standards, he, and we, were wasting our time in paying tribute to these two men. Choose your words carefully, the deaths you trivialise were someone’s son, husband, father and brother. Not worthy of two Memorials? A thousand Memorials wouldn’t even begin to express the meanings of their deaths.
Regards.

I’ll second that!
Sorry for all those who planned to go and were disapointed, it’s not the organisers fault, it’s the authrioties, health and saftey people, there are guidelines put in plce for events like this, all i will say is, people know the risks of going to british airshows, they are unpredictable.
Very true, it’s wasn’t the organisers fault that they had to cancel… But what was their fault was the way that it was handled.
What I wonder is what conditions would ave had to have prevailed for Sundays show to go ahead? They kept all the traders on site saying that the decision regarding Sunday would be taken at 4 o’clock. The weather was very kind to Fairford today, but still they have canceled tomorrow… Why do they have to mess people about like they do?
Lastly, why were the VIP’s allowed into the show today? I was very cynical when they turned Saturday into a ticket only event saying it was so the VIP’s didn’t get mobbed by the public… now the show is canceled but the VIP’s still get on.
As with most problems relating to RIAT, it isn’t what they do that upsets people… It’s the way that they do it.
This has got to be elf n safety nonsense…..
I can remember appalling mud fests at UK airshows back in the 1980’s and earlier and not being cancelled, especially at this late hour.
What a feckin joke….as others have said, there will be many that won’t know about this until at or near the Fairford tomorrow:(
Glad I’m going to DX instead.
I think Legends numbers will be up as a result.
Health and safety or not, I think they had little choice in the matter. I have just traveled back from Poland this morning at some crazy hour to help my father set a stall up at RIAT. We got onto Fairford and decided to call it day before they announced that it was canceled… Its just not possible to hold a display in those conditions. We couldn’t even set up which is why we left for home… The carparks are already trashed and at least one of the main camp sites had to close last night because of the weather and will remain closed for the rest of the weekend.
I think it is blatantly obvious what is happening here… Over the years, RIAT has become far more of a corporate event, and much less of a public airshow (IMO). This seems to me to be a great way to keep the crowds down on Saturday so that corporate world can have their own little show, and then let the masses in on Sunday… Pack them in like sardines, while the corporate big wigs sleep off their hangover from the night before. Meanwhile the Vulcan and F22 will make it a show to remember, and all the magazines will tell you what a fantastic day it was, because, if you have a ticket, or you go on the Sunday, then it will be a fantastic day. However, Mr and Mrs Smith with little Jonny and sister have just spent 6 hours in a car only to be told “Sorry.. If you aint got a ticked then you aint coming in”. RIAT then try and turn them away, but by now they’re already into the one way system and they cant get out because of the masses behind them. It’s now 1 o’clock and the police insist that they open the gates to elevate the problem that has just repeated itself 50,000 times as people from all over the country descend on sleepy Fairford.
I could understand this if they announced it months ago, but to do so just a few days before the show is an absolute disgrace… And why only Saturday? Probably because of the above!
Sorry guys… Rant over!
Okay, so the big question is, will she be Definatley at RIAT, if so brilliant.
NO… She wont DEFINITELY be at RIAT. However, you can rest assured that all people involved will be doing all they can to try and get her there… But she’s old, and (dare I say it) temperamental.
Nothing is definite at any airshow untill the wheels are on the ground… And even then there is no guarantee that they will play ball.
Thank you for all the kind words. I’m pleased that you like the photos.
NJ673 – yes, this is the aircraft that Maurice was selling.
I have to agree with you Elwick, it would be great to see her down at Old Warden some day… We’ll see if something can be sorted!
Thanks once again.
Does it matter?
.
Strange reply:confused: No, of course it ‘doesn’t matter’, but people have a genuine interest in vintage aircraft and those who fly them. Is there anything wrong with asking the question?
Sorry, I just dont see the point of your response… Seems like a perfectly reasonable question to me.
Les, thanks for the apology!
VX927,
That is the wrong link.. the one you posted IS of a fast taxy which was done after her aborted takeoff to at least give the crowd something impressive..
The correct link is here. You can hear the commentator going on about her and if you listen close you can hear the disappointment in the crowd with “oh thats a shame” and Oh to bad etc etc..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeLa6mvj6Y0
Notice she has a landing light “out” on the stbd wing as well?
So she aborted her take off run, and then went around again and did a fast taxy?
That was an aerodynamic landing Peter, not a take off. Waddo has a long enough runway to preclude the use of the ‘chute. Anyway, I guess they wanted to save having to re-pack so it can be used at Farnborough.
Ref the BUFF. A RAF source says (Sat) it couldn’t be refuelled where it was as the concrete of those pans wouldn’t take the weight. It would have needed to taxy across to the far side pans and this would have further upset an already severly disjointed show schedule.
😎
No Les… It was an aborted take off on the Sunday that Peter is referring too. Nose up all the way! Aborted Take Off at Waddington
I’ve just returned from waddington… 558 is parked up on te ‘live’ side of the airfield… I understand that she will be flying at the show.
Even if there was a fee to get near them both it would be a good fundraiser!
I think that would be the final nail in the coffin… The public have already paid more than enough to get near her!
Calm down boys!!!!! Its a transit flight! at the moment there is still no permit, And untill that comes through the DA cant be done so its only on static.
And back down to reality!!!!!!!
