thankyou for the responses, in the final analysis theres the old addage .”if something is working well, why change it ” they were utterly reliable not overly complex and people liked them. its rather like changing the shape of londons underground train tunnels to square shaped isnt it ,point being ,theres no point end of:cool: 😎 😎

    undercarts

thanks everyone for thse responses and exellent phots of the B52 landing ballet amazing! id no idea that TSR2 had and undercart problem at all perhaps it was a deciding factor in its demise? if the problem couldnt be overcome, or Healy used it as an excuse to cancel the project.?
the short stirling was a tragedy of ministerial interference and could have been a truly formidable bomber if it had been designed with the correct wingspan as one member has covered very well, and the undercarriage mods executed by shorts were a quick fix enabling the aircraft to be put into service without too much delay, is there any test footage of the stirlings undercart retracting? ive seen footage of the HE177s retracting it splayed out sideways very quickly for a large aircraft, thanks again everyone:cool:

We have established that some of the actual landing fields were rigged. As for the bomb storage areas, thats something I have not heard of. Would you have a potential explosive device already rigged, in an area where you would do your utmost to ensure there were no unwanted risks?.
This needs a WW2 armourer to clarify..that’s if they were even ‘in the know’!

hello denis thanks for the response
there were many airfield in yorkshire whos bomb dumps were “rigged” including Rufforth and Tholthorpe to name but two apparently all the airfields in our county were assessed for their vulnerability to enemy capture and these were then “rigged ” accordingly i beleive the figure was approx 70% of a total of 90 airfields ,there were also similar detonation devices placed in the control towers and communications centres, somewhere there must be drawings of these devices and their installation etc 😎

    undercarriages

exellent stuff thankyou for the responses, its most interesting to observe any aircrafts undercart retract slow, balletic leaning towards artistic in its inception(very sad arent I) i liked the fairey barracudas set up,and also the type which first rotates the oleo leg prior to retraction, is there a film of the short stirlings undercart retracting i understand that was quite an operation given its size and complexity.

As Ferrari have already confirmed their drivers for next season I’d say that’s a non starter plus Lewis probably feels he owes some loyalty to MacLaren for their years of support.

    thanks for the response
lewis hamilton owes mclaren nothing, they owe him one world title
    1. there was a probleM (supposedly) with the gearbox when the car was in park fermem therefore why didnt maclaren simply change the unit ,ok hamilton would have started at the back of the grid or maybe pit lane, but given his previous tenatious progress he would have fought his way to the front as hed done in previous races this year.so had they done so no problem.
2.why initiate a third pit stop had they fuelled him sufficiently on stop two he again would have had a chance to win the title, martin brundle expressed his surprise at maclaren doing this .
    3. why was alonso so far off the leaders pace(40secs) when the maclaren had been competitive with ferrari all season this was also hamiltons problem in catching kubica and rosberg why were these previously competitive race cars now so flat when all year they had been at most 8 seconds behind ferrari.
grand prix motor racing is one big corruption, these race teams are proffesionals all they do all year is race race race ,constantly testimg inproving their steeds with multi million dollar facilities (top teams of course) with that kind of prowess nothing is lsft to chance ,they rehearse every scenario to allow for the unexpected, working 24hrs days on end to ensure perfection so i doubt these so called failiures are honestly caused look at bernie eccleston ,all year hes pushing for lewis to win the championship, last race and he opts for fernando alonso why?the sport is not honest and millions of people are being duped year after year who support formula one.

    lewis hamilton

thanks for the responses, yes hes a remarkable young man with experience that outweighs his years hes a tremendous talent,i just wonder why mclaren allowed lewis to lose the championship? lets be honest the whole tech team have monitors that view the car at all times why the did they not see his tyres were shot laps before after all all they do is race cars and nothing else its so routine as to be automatic so how do they miss worn tyres ? ,or was alonso being cosseted to win instead its truly unbelievable, and the farce last week well i rest my case,if i were lewis hamilton id say goodbye to maclaren and approach the prancing horse where they do appreciate their drivers, 😡

thankyou all for the responses, clearly these “watchers” are here to stay and will im sure increase in numbers ,my complaint is that the huge financial gain from these “watchers” isnt used to improve the national road system to any great degree if it were how much better they would be as these cameras have been gaining cash for many years but roads do not improve to any great factor, nor do local roads improve so where does the revenue go ?(we are talking 115 million last year)certainly not on our highways. 😡

Anybody interested in Scottish Airfields might like to know that there is a new book out called “Drem, Scotlands Spitfire Airfield” by Malcolm Fife.
It can be bought from Kesley’s Bookshop in Haddington East Lothian or probably through the printers GMS Enterprises (http://www.GMENTERPRISES.net), ISB Number 1-904514-35-9.
A really good read about one of Scotlands most important airfields during WW11.

wasnt drem where the aircraft landing light system was perfected hence them being called drem lights? 😎

    von braun

Thanks everyone for you exellent comments whichever way you view this man (commited nazi?scientist) he was the space programme ,agreed he wasnt too concerned about the slave labour issue during the V1/2 production but did he have any choice in the matter ? had von braun commented about the slave labour and their working conditions ,he could have probably compromised his position and been “dealt with “as it were, his assembled team could have carried on with the work as his contribution had been made (my theory) so i beleive he chose to say nothing and survive, and in those perilous times towards the wars ceassation (with hitler on the rampage )everyone covered their backs im sure, War is appalling, with no perameters at all therefore all is allowable as it were, once the hostilities began no one side fought fairly or with complete honour its how wars, are people must quickly adapt, adjust and with luck ultimately survive, von braun adapted and survived simple as that 😎 😎 😎
