Please don’t mention the words ‘Mildenhall Burgers’ ever again, at this time of year we would be normally gearing up for it, only a few weeks to go……

HP obviously have the Greene King syndrome, ie, you brew established beers taken over from other parts of the country in a different place and expect the public not to notice that it tastes completely differently.
My pal used to be the architect for Shipstones in Nottingham, they were bought out by Greenalls (who have subsequently gone down the pan, thank God) and whoever brews it now, makes it in Brum. No disrespect to Brum brewing, but it’s a completely different taste, not the same stuff. At first my pal tried to say that brewing techniques were so advanced, that you couldn’t tell the difference, my ****, he’s since changed his mind, having escaped from the shackles of the industry.
There was always a bottle of HP lurking in the pantry of our house when I was a kid, was never keen myself, but I’m not a great fan of sauces, unless it was on those polish sausages, burgers….no…. lets not mention that.

You may be interested to know that several days on, the tadpoles are doing well. We have put more plants, snails, water beetles etc in there and it’s all a heaving soup.
I won’t introduce any minnows or sticklebacks till the tadpoles are much bigger.
Incidentally, Wikapedia reccomends boiled lettuce as primary tadpole food, but they seem happy scoffing the algae.
Had more visits from the reed bunting, except he brings his mate with him now, they were both pecking around at 7:00 this morning, it’s very pleasant to sit out with your first cup of coffee and watch it.
As I write, the great **** are out in force picking up dog hair from right outside the back door and chasing each other like lunatics, I suspect we have nesting robins, dunnocks and blackbirds, the new bird boxes are being ignored though.

Just out of interest, a couple of weeks ago, I was driving up to see a pal who lives north of Grantham, just off the A1, when, just before the service roundabout north of Grantham, travelling south was a Comet front fuselage mounted on an artic, painted grey and with an RAF roundel painted on the cut off rear, it seemed to be an RAF promotion vehicle/a/c, anyone have any info on it. Sorry to interfere with your excellent Royal Comet thread, I thought it may be the same one though, just a chance, who knows.

well As Im allready going to see (the real) Who and Jethro Tull in Helsinki This year (and those events have effectively bankrupted my economy allready:D 😀 ) Guess I need to pass them this time…

But I will be in with the spirit, as the real band tends to be too stubbourn to do anything any more:( 😡

I saw Jethro Tull a few years ago at Sheffield, they were never my favourite band during their ‘Period’ but Ian Andersons chat and performance was really fantastic, you will really enjoy their performance. I’m not prepared to shell out huge amounts to see half the Who though, I’ve checked it out ands it’s silly money, just like the Police, in fact all up and coming major concerts seem to require new mortgages to be able to see them and they can all get stuffed quite frankly, I’m quite happy to recall seeing Led Zep for nothing, no not a scam for free, Kev35, it was at their own instigation.

So, what of the original Pink Floyd, I’ve looked on their website and without saying much about it, I think that the rift between the rest of the band and Roger Waters is too strong for them to perform or record again.
It was noticeable at the Live 8 concert that, while Waters seemed to be genuinely enjoying himself, Gilmour and Wright in particular were exchanging glances, and the choice of songs seemed pretty biased towards the Gilmour/Wright camp.
Shame really, but on the other hand, apart from Comfortably Numb, I always hated Another Brick in The Wall, it was a piece of self indulgence on the part of Roger Waters and led to the split.
I was lucky enough to see the band on their first tour after the departure of Syd Barrett, a truly psychadelic experience, liquid light show, the lot, enhanced by the waves crashing under the ballroom at Portsmouth’s South Parade pier, before Ken Russell destroyed the place while making Tommy, sorry Ken, not your fault personally, I believe a spotlight overheated.
The next time I saw them was during the Echoes tour at Trent Poly, when I was threatened with expulsion for demanding to use the sports hall toilets, despite the fact that I was a member of the Trent students union.
I do find Syd Barretts quirky stuff hard to take now, I don’t think that his material has aged well, but at least he was indirectly responsible for one of the greatest songs ever written, Shine on you Crazy Diamond, who was really responsible for that, Gilmour or Waters.
I have always tried to reconcile myself with both camps, but tend to go towards the Gilmour/Wright side of things, sorry Roger, but it’s like Lennon/Mcartney, opposites seem to work, but as individuals, it’s not the same anymore. Having said that, I did like the Division Bell, some good stuff on that album.
Mind you, how can you knock someone who had a P-51, did Gilmour ever fly it himself.
There was a fantastic documentary made about the band on BBC2 several years ago, hopefully my tape has survived my house move.
Hopefully these Aussies will appear at our nearest venue, I would be quite interested in seeing them.

I’m afraid we won’t be seeing any more Midenhall airshows. Even if plenty of people can be amassed to organise such an event again, i don’t think such cholesterol levels are legal in this century.

Mildenhall was food binge!

Don’t remind us, I’m struggling with the hallucination of THAT Polish sausage which keeps hovering over the lawn.
Incidentally, while the secondary gates are still in place, there seem to be so many concrete blocks and spiky things behind them that I reckon it would take someone of the calibre of dear Fred Dibnah months to clear them away.

“Suspended” is completely accurate, and here’s why. Whenever a base puts on an open house, most of the personnel assigned to the base are assigned some sort of duty, such as parking, security, or as a vendor, to cite a few examples. Take away the personnel, and you won’t be able to put on an open house or airshow. That’s why a lot of units have had to suspend their open houses at various points over the past six years; there just aren’t enough people at the base to put on the show. When I was in Kansas we had to cancel our local open house one year for just that reason. The reason we were able to put it on pretty much every other year since 2001 was because there was a pretty sizeable ANG contingent on the base, and we let them run with it if we had a lot of people overseas at that time (do remember that open houses and airshows aren’t usually scheduled during the winter, so it’s not like you have a huge window if you want to try and just rechedule the thing). So, while there may be secondary security issues that have helped suspend some open houses or airshows, the primary reason is most likely still a lack of personnel.

Lack of personnel is a highly unlikey excuse for Mildenhall, in affect there are 3 bases within a few miles, Mildenhall, Lakenheath and Feltwell, I was in the area last week and us Brits are outnumbered, talk about ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’.
It’s all down to security, bottom line, the problem is that they’ve changed the entrance into The Hall so much that I can’t see how it could be modified to cope with airshow traffic, and I hate those timber panels inserted at drivers height so that you can’t see through the fence, what a waste of time and such an obstacle to keen types like me.
On a different tack, Lakenheath have kept their viewing area while Mildenhall have removed theirs. Why? No doubt there are CCTV cameras focused on the Lake area and I’m sure that everyone entering is processed via their car reg, good idea too, they used to do that at Wethersfield.
Perhaps some brave soul would like to put on a dustbin sack with a slot cut in it and test the theory out, hopefully, you wouldn’t be able to report on the results.

Sorry, I’m not hiding from turning this into a political issue from what was a damn good discussion on a/c tactics, that’s something that I don’t know much about and I should have left it at that, please carry on gentleman, it’s a very interesting topic, lets forget the politics, I’ve transferred them onto another thread.
