Hopefully the poor taste was refering to the Greene King IPA.
Will any Mirages, Skyhawks, Daggers and Pucaras be taking part, invitation only of course, along with Lady T.
Does Simon Weston, one of the bravest men on the planet, get an invite, assuming he wants to be centre stage for the celebration of an event where the PBI suffered at the hands of dire political mistakes on both sides.
Sorry, I have a real grouse about this war, I’m not saying that those who took part shouldn’t be honoured, but, flypasts, no way, not now.
My son is at Nottingham Uni and one of his best mates is an Argentinian, despite the fact that neither of them were born before the conflict, I’m banned from talking about it, thats how sensitive it is, bloody ridiculous, they don’t even know what it was all about, the pair of them.
Rather than bringing it all up again, we should have invited them over for the opening match at the New…cough….cough…. Wembley Stadium, I’m sure that the cheating b##### would endevour to get us all sent of, but…. ces la vie.
We should be working together, not reopening old wounds, we know who the real enemy is, todays incident with Iran has really got my back up, I would like to have seen HMS Cornwall loose off a few Harpoons in the right direction, now that would have made my day. But, again, PBI in the hands of politicians.
If we blame the Junta then look closer, the invasion was actually planned by 2 Argentine Admirals who persuaded Galtiari to go for it. However, also we are to blame to a point, if the GOvernment hadnt been so concerned with military cutbacks, ignored the Argentine “testers” and basically hadnt messed up with Foreign Policy by allowing those idiots in the Foreign Office to ignore the Islanders hopes of being British citizens giving the Junta plenty of signs we werent bothered about the Falklands, then it might not have happened. Bex
Quite right Bex, it may have been down to the national pride of a couple of Argentine Admirals, but the ‘sophisticated’ knowledge of the British government of the time should have reacted to what was happening down there, it was b#### obvious, I could see the alarm bells ringing when the ‘Scrap Merchants’ arrived, and the incident was all over News At Ten, so why was nothing done, was it all to do to with not revealing the position of British nuclear subs when we were still involved in the Cold War.
Incidentally, why have you censored my use of the word ‘British’, are you under orders from the Junta, or, shudder, Thatchers secret police.
Was there not a previous threat to the Falklands under Callaghans Labour government who had positioned a hunter killer nuclear sub in the area, or was that a diplomatic fairytale, which, however, persuaded the Argentine military to not attempt anything. I thought that the invasion fleet had already sailed, but turned back, not knowing exactly was out there.
For some of you, the sun shone out of Thatchers backside, but she should have learned from previous mistakes and taken note of what was happening, I consider that the entire conflict was down to her neglect of the looming crisis, she was too involved in destroying the Trade Union movement, which involved the wholesale destruction of the Bri****h coal mining and manufacturing industry. How many lives were lost on both sides, if the situation had been handled correctly at a diplomatic level in the first place, it would never have happened, it only took more than one brain cell to realise that the so called scrap merchants occupation of the South Sandwich Islands was a tester, had a diplomatic announcement of a Nuclear Sub being out in the area, whether or not it was there, nothing would have happened.
I’m not knocking the involvement of our incredibly brave forces, and I think that the action boosted our military standing in the world by 2000%, but it was all a sad lapse by ‘Madam PM’.
I think that in my case, living a reccuring life of 60’s ‘Peace and Love’, it was amazing for this country to be involved in such a war, and I loved it, wow, watching the news every night, the Brits stuffing someone at last, yeh, well, we get a few casualties, isn’t that what it was all about, not really, I’m still going to work drawing up peoples houses while poor sods are dying on the other side of the world in an incident that, whatever the result, isn’t going to influence my life one bit.
In retrospect, it was a totally out of order incident that cost, what, 2000 lives on both sides, so sad, I hope she sleeps at night, not.
It was featured on BBC Look East 2 days ago, the quality of work looked impressive, but as usual on these sort of articles, not a lot was made clear, it was stated however, that it would be a ground runner but not certified to fly due to the restraints of the CAA, I’m not an expert, but it looked a pretty thorough rebuild/restoration to me.
They don’t seem to have worked out ticket prices yet, though I was told this weekend that it would be £19:95. Does anyone know whether they are available yet, just trying to save a phone call to DX.
We are having a visit from the Budapest branch of the family that week, Uncle Georg has 2 requests, a visit to the sailors reading rooms at Southwold and a trip to DX, jammy git doesn’t know what he’s in for, I don’t think he’s ever seen a Spitfire, let alone a Lancaster, I’ll probably have to take the smelling salts with me.
In a sense, it will be interesting to take ‘The Enemy’ around with me, though I think that the Hungarians only sided with the Nazis to get at the Russians, whom they still hate with a real passion.
Looks cool, hopefully the rest of the squadron will be formed of the Thundercats and Ben Affleck and Digby will be his wingmen.
With a bit of luck, Sir Hubert will be the CO and Miss Peabody will be the female interest in the local pub, only serving warm Greene King IPA of course.
Will the legs get individual credits.
I’m surprised that a major film was never made of the event, or was it, it doesn’t spring to mind, I can imagine Johnny Depp and Keith Richards standing on the bridge of the Campletown and Silvester Stallione orchestrating the raid, lets do it boys.
The 1967 film “Attack on the Iron Coast” starring Lloyd Bridges had a fictional storyline, but one which was based on the St Nazaire Raid.
The story covered all the main points of the St Nazaire Raid i.e. 4 funnelled destroyer used to ram dock gates, small launches carrying commandoes etc.
It was a pretty poor B movie which even re-used some incidental music from “633 Squadron”. It is a pity they could not have made an accurate film about the St Nazaire Raid instead

I thought there was something relating to this, I have just IMDB’d it and, unusually, very little information and an unknown (to me) cast that does not contain the usual British stalwarts. From memory it was filmed in Valletta harbour in Malta with bits in Portsmouth dockyard, I will wait for it to appear on afternoon TV rather than check out Amazon, I remember it being a pretty dire film, something to watch on a sunday afternoon while reducing the lunchtime pub alcohol intake.
Unfortunately I was travelling back from the North and missed it, though madam claims to have recorded it, just checked and it’s recorded, noted the plane sketch worthy of Ricky Gervais.
From talking to people, it seems to have been a raid that few know about, the book, ‘The Greatest Raid of All’ is a must read.
Several years ago I visited the site and was surprised to see the amount of damage still evident around the dock area, the gouges in the stonework make you cringe at the thought of the power of the explosion.

Don’t forget that Thatcher appeared in a contrived sketch of ‘Yes Minister’ and what an embarrasing performance that was, shudder.
Brownie points to Tone, but lets not forget that he was desperate to appear as the PM in Little Britain in a previous Red Nose Day, but was forbidden by his ‘advisors’, something to do with being involved with shirtlifters apparently, shame, he could have been ‘ The only Gay in the Village’, sorry Sheree, but then……

C’mon chaps, anyone with more than one brain cell must realise that Eurovision is one of the best comedy shows going and always has been, it’s worth watching for Terry Wogans p### taking comments for a start. This band are just made for it, they are so utterly awful that they should have been put straight through, they are going to give us a side splitting performance and will inevitably dissapear without trace. Those who take this sort of thing seriously have just proved a point by ensuring that the sad little Scouse ( how embarrasing for them ) Tin-Tin lookalike who thinks he’s Frank Sinatra, but isn’t worthy of picking up the dog s### from his garden and lost out on that travesty called Fame Academy, has just had the fastest selling CD album of all time.
If you were a half decent contemporary band like Razorlight or whoever, would you seriously take part in such a joke event, knowing that the public would inevitably vote for a load of dog poo like Scootch.
It was touted around that Morrissey was going to do a ‘Song for Europe’ can you have imagined that, pity he didn’t, he would have no doubt produced a p### taking song and been none the worse off when, Scootch, who will no doubt go down as one of the worst bands in history, beat him to the post.
I look forward to the final and hope that Mr Wogan has well laid into the Jamesons prior to and during his commentary.
Incidentally, has Morrisseys so called attempt to enter got anything to do with the fact that Sandie Shaw once recorded with the Smiths, lovely girl, whatever happened to her, I once had a girl friend who was the spitting image of M Shaw, except had bigger bits, this was prior to ‘Puppet on a String’ though, I may have had second thoughts following that.

It reminds me…what happened to ther replicas made for The Right Stuff film?
Wasn’t one of them on display at Mildenhall Air Fete about 10 years ago, must have been for the 50th anniversary of the event, maybe it’s still kicking about in the back of one of their hangars, seem to remember it looked pretty realistic and I no doubt have it recorded on one of my unplayable Video 8’s.
Don’t attempt to ask at the gate, from the looks of their security at the moment, you’ll end up at Guantanamo Bay with a copy of the Koran and an orange suit.
