It’s a few years since I was in the area, but I think you will find that the railway and tunnel are still extant, the tank museum at Saumur is really good if a little cramped, though if you are lucky, they will be holding their military tattoo in the town which is amazing, they bring out some of the tanks from the museum and run them up, including the only working King Tiger, which is awesome.
St Nazaire U-boat pens are fantastic, they have a sub moored in the exit lock that you can visit, plus the dock that the Campletown blew up, complete with shrapnel marks all over the place, have fun.
Was it at St Nazaire that they filmed some of ‘Das Boot’.
Incidentally, during the 50th anniversary of D-Day, we stayed at the holiday cottage of some friends in the middle of nowhere just outside of Falaise.
While taking a very early morning walk, my late, great old man beckoned me over to this barn in the field next door where he had discovered that the infill panels on the barn consisted of flattened out German fuel cans, each one stamped ‘Wermacht’, wonder if it’s still there.

I shall be very naughty here and say Blackburn Beverley, or about the Avro Shackleton, was surprised to see that there wasn’t one at Cosford or was there’s cut up too.
There seems to be a large proportion of experimental aircraft in the collection so a Spiteful wouldn’t go amiss, nor would the Martin Baker MB5, when is the hybrid due to fly in the USA.

Just a comment, if you want to see an amazing seaside display from the Red Arrows, go to the Cromer Carnival in August. We sat on top of the cliffs to the south of the pier and it was truly brilliant, but possibly even better on the pier though it was pretty packed.
Nice sight 2 years ago was as the Reds dissapeared off to the north, a Polish Sukhoi persued by Jags came tanking by at low level over the sea in the opposite direction, most impressive.
Is my memory correct here, many years ago I was at an airshow at DX when the Reds took off to perform an airshow at Bournemouth and they returned less one member, he’d hit the mast of a yacht over the shore and crashed.
The pilot ejected safely and insisted on returning back to DX in a Hercules, wet but undamaged, can anyone quantify this.
Let us also not forget the Harrier crash at Lowestoft a few years ago that happened just offshore with the sea full of kids.

It must have been the example that was accidentally landed at Pembrey intact in 1942, what happened to it as the example at Hendon is the 2 seat version.

I remember that incident, I was standing in virtually the same place as where the picture was taken, but I was distracted, until I heard a clunk and my brother swearing and turned round to see the a/c rocking back on to it’s tail.
Was that at the last spitfire airshow, I seem to remember that the damage wasn’t too bad, but of course everything had to be checked out.

Incidentally, for all you twitchers out there, I’m currently watching a pair of Goldcrests just a few feet away in my pine tree.

I think it’s highly unlikely, when the last Jag took off in April, they said no more flying.
I would also imagine that a lot of the infrastructure has been removed too, Bigverne will know more about this.
It’s also been mentioned before that the poor road system in the area couldn’t cope with it and after the terrible traffic jams at the last show in 1980, it was said that no more would be held, in fact it was so bad then that it was only my knowledge of the local lanes that I got in at all and when I tried to leave, I didn’t get even off the base till after 2100 hrs, and then had to face the qeue into Norwich, no joke getting home at midnight.
In fact when I went to see the last Jaguar flypast, trying to get round Norwich was a nightmare, I knew it would and actually considered catching the train to Wroxham and biking from there, except that taking bikes on trains these days is virtually impossible. When I left,and there were a lot of people around that day, I went through all the lanes to Dereham and home from there, but even then it took me hours.

Judging by some of the comments on here, I’m glad I didn’t go.
I couldn’t go on Saturday because of family commitments and yesterdays weather started badly to the extent that I thought it would be a wash out like last Septembers airshow, which was frustrating at the time, then it improved later, but for the reasons stated, there’s no point in trying to get in late.
I didn’t realise that OW had a policy of not allowing windbreaks, good for them, I have been guilty of this myself in the past, but that was done in order to have a meeting point for friends and family travelling down from up north, complete with little Union Jack, however I do think it is selfish and have’nt done it for a few years now and don’t intend to again.
I noticed on some of the photographs the large number of people on ‘the other side’, I think that you will find that most of these are families from the village who probably can’t afford the amount of money it would cost them to get in.
Famous character that I know goes over there is the Debden Green ‘Bag Man’, anyone know him?
He lives in a derelict farmhouse near Thaxted and walks to Bishops Stortford everyday in repentance to his mothers death, he takes all his possesions with him in 4 carrier bags.
Every year he walks from Thaxted to Legends and back, sitting in the field opposite, God knows how long it takes him to walk out and back, it’s a long way, but he does it.

No it’s supposed to be landing today, but I can’t see this happening. I couldn’t go to DX yesterday because of madams birthday and a big family party that we had in the evening, today I feel awfull after swapping stories and drinking wine with her Hungarian old man, quite frankly anyway, the weather is so c###, it’s not worth going, and having read some of the reports of the wall to wall windbreaks and people with stepladders, I don’t fancy going anyway, though I quite liked the sight of the Hawk and Dewotine flying together, fantastic.
