Hi everyone, was watching Pierrepoint last night and the filiming was done on an old airfield. Does anyone know which one this was???

Pierrepoint is a biographical drama starring Timothy Spall as executioner Albert Pierrepoint, who was widely renowned as the quickest and most humane hangman in the country during the 1930s and 1940s. But his reputation as an effective yet sympathetic executioner takes a downward turn when he is sent to Germany to execute Nazi war criminals, where the sheer volume of executions strips away the dignity of those condemned.

I think I mentioned this before, I’m almost certain it was West Raynham, Norfolk. There’s a web site featuring filming locations and you can see the patch on the floor where I reckon the gallows was situated.

Now this has raised a question.
I mentioned Peter? Greenaway’s involvement in all this. He was my lecturer in building construction at Basford Hall College of Education Nottingham during the 70’s.
From memory, he was a joiner by trade, a very likeable chap, but we weren’t given any hint of his past.
My father sent me a newspaper cutting in the 80’s written on his retirement, where he admitted to being involved in many well known escape attempts, had built the wooden horse and designed the air replenishment system for the Great Escape tunnels. I gathered at the time that his skills involved him volunteering to remain a prisoner in order that others could take advantage of his ideas and general building knowledge.
Does anyone have any further knowledge of him, I must admit I haven’t Googled, perhaps I should, it’s a good job we didn’t know any of this at the time, we would have never learnt anything, apart from what Steve McQueen had for breakfast every morning, as he apparently acted as an advisor on the film.
How silly of me, THE Peter Greenaway is a famous avant garde film producer, how do we get through his infinite number of postings on Google and find the details of someone worth considering.

TIGHAR’s UK based member in Barmouth, Wales, Mr Matt Rimmer, (TIGHAR Membership No 2916) who holds the MOD licence to recover the P-38 had offered to answer any questions on the project over on the WIX forum. Several questions were posed but Mr Rimmer has either not visited that site or has chosen not to reply.

If he has not seen those questions, and if he should happen to pass by here, perhaps he’d give us his response?

Perhaps you should use your expertise to promote a TV documentary on the subject and shame TIGHAR. I’m sure it would make great viewing when you turned up on the beach with all the Channel 5 sponsored recovery equipment and those obvious numpties from TIGHAR appeared waving writs, which I’ve no doubt they would do, I would like to volunteer my services to help you throw them in the sea where they belong.
I know that this airframe has been sitting relatively intact for 60 odd years, but with our increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, anything could happen to it over the coming winter months, given the initial publicity, I would have assumed it would be safely ashore and being properly conserved by now, the efforts made to rescue Glacier Girl make any attempts to recover this airframe pale into insignificance.

The Great Escape is a film that we’ve all become used to watching, snuggling up comfortably on the sofa on Boxing Day with a glass or two of vino, enjoying the performances of our Hollywood heroes, particularly our Steve, enjoying the jolly music, having a good laugh and forgetting what it was really all about. It’s a fantasic achievement in the business of making money out of lifes real tradgedies, but we love it all the same, just as we do The Battle of Britain, The Dambusters, and all the rest of them, but if it had been made in all it’s nasty reality, it would probably have gone nowhere, a film noir to be avoided at all costs. At least a small spark of what really happened has been put across to the great and good, lets hope they understand and appreciate that.

Well, the Aussies are sports mad, and well funded and they don’t spend most of their money on Football like most of the rest of the world with the exception of the US and the sub continent. South Africa, Rugby Union and Cricket are the main sports, with football coming up behind. India and Pakistan, Cricket rules king, period. As for the rest Football is where the money really is, including the UK. However, thanks to John Major (about the only good thing I can say about the guy), the UK has been able to improve across the board as regards Sport.

They will be third by the end of the games Pete, Can’t see Team GB winning more than another couple of golds max, The Russians have far more prospects for gold in the remaining events and are one gold behind. However UK sports target was 35 to 41 medals with 10 to 12 Golds. As of now Team GB have 40 medals (plus a minimum of 3 bronze medals from the boxing to add to that total) and 17 Golds. The former head of the Italian Olympic Committee, Luciano Barra correctly prediced that team GB would be 10th in 2004, using the results of of the last world championships in each sport and Barra’s perdiction for Team GB this time round is 4th with 48 medals. I think we would have had a not bad chance of almost making that figure with the medal chances we had, until the Mens Sprint Relay threw a very good chance of a medal away.

I agree with you, we couldn’t expect the Russians not to put in the late spurt that we should have done, they are a big and very proud nation and must be feeling frustrated at not being up there with the leaders until now.
I feel very sorry for our relay team though, especialy as the USA cocked up their change over as well, it’s very easy to get into a tangle with the baton when emotions are fired up, I’ve messed up a few times myself, they must be gutted.
I find it very interesting how some countries medal tallies are so low, it really surprises me for instance that South Africa, cricket and rugby world class players, have won only a silver, Hungary, no golds, Argentina, Brazil, India, Pakistan, nowhere, and even France is way behind us in the medals table.
I’ve critisised our athletes, but looking at the GB performance in comparison to other, comparable nations, we are on another planet. Forget Australia, they don’t compare, their entire GNP must be devoted to sport, and if they feel they can afford it, good for them, but I find a country with a big area but relatively small population, to be achieving so much is a little wierd, they must have some sort of secret elixir, perhaps it’s called a decent and happy lifestyle, or Bondi beach perhaps.
Not knocking you Aussies, good luck to you, it’s great to see how much such a relatively unpopulated country can achieve, how do you do it.
