Pete TrumanSounds generally like the usual brilliant show, I’m as sick as a pig for missing it, I remember having to miss the 2005 show as well because my son brought back some hideous virus from Africa which put me out for nearly 2 months!!
At least having shoehorned myself into a chair in the garden yesterday afternoon I was treated to the sight and sound of Pink Lady flying home very low over the back garden, which made me wonder whether that will be the last time we will ever see her flying again, was anything said about this at Legends.
I would have at least liked to have gone to DX today to see the Belle leave, but apart from the discomfort, I’m not allowed to drive anyway because of the tablets, they tend to space you out a bit.
Has any kind soul got a list of the flying order, different formations and in particular, how close were the B-17’s and what escort did they have.
I’m glad to see that the Mustang incident wasn’t as bad as it could have been, sounds like a brilliant bit of flying to me.
Pete TrumanMalta Story was made in 1953, much of it was original archive footage, and I seem to recall that the aircraft mostly featured in the film were Spitfires.
I haven’t seen the film for a while, but the studio shots were at Pinewood, perhaps OW’s Gladiator was used for scenes filmed over here. IMDB doesn’t say much, perhaps they borrowed Gladiators from Portugal as they did Hurricanes for another famous 1950’s movie, ‘Reach for the Sky’ I recall.

Pete TrumanWhen TFC’s Gladiator eventually does fly with OW’s example, how long ago do you think that 2 Gladiators last flew together, I see that Portugal flew the type until 1953 so I presume it was then.
Pete TrumanI only went to RIAT at Fairford once, about 15 years ago.
I found it far too big, too far to travel within the airfield too much to see and a pain to get in and out of, though I was at least lucky enough to have been parked right on the crowdline.
I preffered it when they moved the show to Cottesmore for a year, it was more compact and more accesible.
I recall parking in a field though, whether the geology at Cottesmore is more suited to the weather, I wouldn’t like to say, aren’t both airfields situated on the ridge of stone that runs diagonally across the country, ie: Ancaster and Cotswold.
With all those redundant aircraft sitting on the airfield at Fairford this morning, a bit of a morning flyby at Legends would have been a nice gesture.
Pete TrumanAfter all the exciting build up and really looking forward to this one, I spent yesterday evening in casualty at Broomfield Hospital being diagnosed with a cracked rib, I’ve been a considerable amount of pain for the last couple of days and put it down to a pulled muscle.
Despite being dosed up with some horrendous pain killers, I’m going nowhere for a while.
Even my brother was supposed to come down for the show but had to cancel because he’s got flu.
Oh well, this was obviously not to be for the Trumans.
At least I saw Liberty Belle arrive, and Pink Lady and the Junkers 52 fly in.

Pete TrumanFairford is going to be chaotic this morning, there are going to be a lot of angry people turn up, those who know nothing about the pre-purchase ticket situation and those with tickets who have no idea about the show being cancelled.
I went once and had to set off at the crack of dawn to get there, and I had tickets, even then it was a pain to get in, it was much more user friendly when it was held at Cottesmore, the road system is better for a start. In other circumstances, without the benefit of this Forum and the internet, I may have done the same, happily set off with my ticket, looking forward to the days events, I would not have been impressed had I got there and had to queu only to be sent home.
Perhaps the F-22 can be sent over to Legends to form the Heritage Flight with Steve Hinton, the Vulcan lurking behind.
Me, I’m even more peed off.
We had a great weekend planned, unfortunately my brother has the flu and can’t get down to Legends, I’ve cracked a rib and can’t even bloody drive, I had to miss out on my sons graduation day yesterday, as my missus would say and actually did, ‘Nice one God’.
Not a happy bunny today, I’ve looked forward to this Legends for a while, I doubt whether I can make it, had a trial run up to Sainsburies just now and shouldn’t have attempted it.

10 years ago we took our Scout group up to the Peak District for a week.
My brother and I organised a hiking trip around the Black Peak, specifically to investigate crash sites. We started off with a crash site of a Dakota, then ended up at the B-29 wreck at Shelf Stones.
So what did the kids do, they took bits, some of them very large.
We actually set up a bit of a shrine in the scout hut, which is still there, other bits were knicked by a local enthusiast and as far as I know are treasured in a museum that I won’t mention.
The items in the scout hut are displayed at the moment with all the relevant background information, how long this will last before some future scoutmaster wants to make money on E-Bay is anyones guess, this was all done at the time in good faith, I’ll never do it again,

The reception the guys in Belle got at Bentwaters was pretty special, when I have had a chance to edit the video of today I think you will see that. A very special day for all.
I apologise, I thought there was something odd about it, I’ve seen the initial video of the events at Bentwaters, what a day, I think that Don is a very special person, I look forward to possibly meeting him over the weekend.
I’d like to hear a bit of feedback from Jules Horowitz on these events, c’mon matey, what do you think.
Pete TrumanWhilst “working from home” have just been watching a large silver bird circling the tower at Parham – brilliant. Quite emotional really – left me a bit speechless, in the same way that the BBMF does sometimes.
Many thanks to BeaufighterV1 and TFC blogspot for heads up. It would be interesting to hear what Don Brooks’ thoughts are about the reception they’ve had in the UK so far, as it appears a little low key at times. I’m sure that will all change at the w/e
I agree, I got very emotional seeing her arrive at DX last week, I was very tearful in fact, but is it because some of us have had close family ties with people who put their lives on the line in those days, everyone must have a family member who did.
Unfortunately the media is obsessed with house and petrol prices at the moment, you can’t blame them, life is a bitch, it’s events like this that should be promoted in order to give us a bit of pleasure.
I spoke to my son on his mobile today, he’s picking weeds in a field near DX, he was overcome at seeing the Belle fly over him this morning, thats just a typical youth, well, maybe not, I doubt whether any of his mates have been inside a B-17 as he has, probably can’t even remember it though, but something stirred inside him all the same.
What really annoyed me, and it may have been TV editing, I don’t know, but when I watched the BBC coverage of LB landing the other day, someone was pointing out to Don Brooks and Co where the restaurants were at DX, nice one, you fly all that way and you’re expected to pay for your own lunch and queu with everyone else, wierd.

Pete TrumanCats really are an enigma, there is definately a black and white attitude to them, not much in between.
Personally, I wouldn’t have one of the arrogant little sods, on the other hand I couldn’t hurt one either, I have the greatest of respect for them.
The best way of dealing with them is to own a Jack Russell, they have a built in attitude problem as far as cats are concerned, and our local cats know it.
I know them all and they only come into the garden when they think it’s safe, open the back door and they face immediate death, old Scooby Doo doesn’t mess about as far as cats are concerned, he hates them with a vengence.
We have a multitude of wild birds in our garden, the cunning cats lurk all over the place to catch the babies, mainly over the other side of the fence where they think it’s safe, you can pick up the alarm calls from the parents and we spring into action, Scooby protects the birds on our side and I chase the cats off, thats when they adopt the attitude of pretending to be big cuddly softies, devious little gits.
You think you know where you are with dogs, cats are inclined to inhabit another world entirely suited to them.
