I’d hate to be the phorensics guy dusting for… well, you know…

Dog Poo? Always a problem in our garden.

My sympathies to his relatives, a terrible way to go, a great loss to Abba, the biggest and worst non event in Pop music.

Some intelligence reports said that she was sunk by a Japanese sub which then machine-gunned the survivors, which would explain why there were no
survivors from HMAS Sydney and yet about 318 out of the 390 crew of the
    Kormoran were saved

According to accounts that I’ve subsequently read, the Kormoran managed to fire it’s own torpedoes before the Sydney could react, but were these commercial raiders fitted with what must have been a complicated device.
From sources that I’ve looked at, the captain of the Sydney was suspicious of this vessel, but didn’t train it’s main armament on it, very odd, so what was used to sink the Kormoran.
Your theory sounds quite pertinent, knowing the mind set of the Japanese at the time, they probably sank the Kormoran as well, in order to keep their mouths shut at the extent of their own brutality. On the other hand, wouldn’t the German survivors have said something about this at the time, or would they cover up for their ‘allies’.
Does anyone know whether one of the survivors, and at 318 of them it’s a good chance, are still alive, as I presume that they spent the war in an Australian prison camp for the duration, though I have a nagging feeling that there was some sort of breakout at an Ozzie POW camp and a few were killed, another hushed up story perhaps.
How many of these POW’s were allowed to live in Oz after the war, are any still there.

I have a small brass periscope stamped ‘C Cowles & Co, Newhaven, Conneticut’.
My late uncle, Eric Brown, was an armourer on board HMS Illustrious and this little item was used to check the breeches of the guns of Corsairs, making sure that nothing was stuck ‘up the spout’.
I suppose it has quite a history, my uncle went out to the States on board the Queen Mary to join the ship after it’s American refit.
They carried out trials then sailed through the Panama Canal to join up with the Pacific Fleet. I gather he was working on deck when they were hit by a Kamikaze, the story goes that the Japanese pilots head was preserved in a pickle jar in the mess, by a wierd coincidence I had a dream about this last night.
How this litle thing survived the war is beyond me, considering the incidents that happened to Eric, at one stage his life was saved by Mountbatten himself, who on an inspection of the ship found Eric seriously ill in the ships medic ward and had him flown to Cape Town in his personal Sunderland for urgent medical treatment, family legend has it that Mountbatten flew the plane himself.
Unfortunately a problem with my cable connection prevents me from publishing a photo of it.

    The Dorrigo Steam Railway in NSW has 2 former Railway Operating Division locomotives. From their website;

    DRSM

Nice one, what a collection, don’t let the Brits get their hands on those R.O.D’s, we had the chance and we obviously didn’t love them as much as you do.

Sorry Peter I just looked in me Railway magzine and it says a G5 good knows why I said N8 😮
Did GWR name some of there locos from the Battle of Britian?

Yeah Bittern is back and based on the Mid hants Railway (The Watercress Line) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c5/Bittern_at_ropley_1024_%28JPG%29.jpg

    James

The GWR named some of their Castle class locos after the BoB a/c, ie, Spitfire,Hurricane etc, however, I don’t think that any of these have survived.
Bitterne won’t be seen much on the Mid Hants, it’s too much in demand on the national network and amongst more influential ‘Oop North’ railways.
We have the planes, the north have the trains.

i’ve been out of trains for awhile but with 3 a4’s in steam at once is bittern back? if so doe’s she still have the early style wheel covers?.
if they can build all these new build loco’s (a1,saint,paitriot etc) why cant we build one little s class streamliner in victoria?.
    paul
ps is duchess of hamilton still getting the streamline treatment?

Bittern does not have the all singing and dancing Gresley streamling as Mallard has, but I prefer the motion to be exposed.

Duchess of Hamilton is being really kept under wraps, but it is under work at the moment and will be revealed in all it’s streamlined glory at the end of the year, no problem.
Did any of you realise that the said locomotive was the one sent to the USA just before the war as an exhibition piece, and was brought back under the threat of U-Boat attack.

As for your ‘S’ class, I’m afraid that my knowledge of Oz locos is very limited, but do you not still have 02’s still about, are any capable of running, we only have one here.
For the unbielevers, the 02 class was built by the GCR before the First World War and used as a freight loco by the WD on the continent as a replacement loco for those destroyed.
Somehow, some of them ended up in OZ, I don’t know how, and my last recollection is that they had more surviving than we did, ie 1, sad isn’t it.

I’m happy to believe that Peter knows of what he speaks.

But I can’t help thinking that if the thing is relatively easy to move then an enforcement order when / if they finally catch up with you is no big deal.

You should have a contingency though.

Certainly I parked an historic Daimler Ferret on a small communal parking area of a housing estate in Didcot for about three years with no repercussions.

    Moggy

Parking a car is a bit different from a jet fighter, and enforcement officers can be complete b#####s, I can assure you.
What’s happened to the instigator of this thread, has he gone to sleep while all rages about him.

After my hideous weekend Newforest, I’m surprised I’m still here old pal, if I went into details, you’d never, ever have a go again, but c’mon, you’ve been waiting for a good rant, all in the best possible cause though.

Don’t be put off by the forms Andrewman, I’ll help you with those.

Moggy, if you could have seen this bloody insignificant wall, you wouldn’t believe the trouble it caused. The owners knocked this poxy little 2 foot high contraption, built of Flettons in the 50’s, in order to park their cars on the front of their property and alleviate the acute parking situation in the road.
Unfortunately, the property was in Finchingfield and despite the fact that there was no complaint from neighbours, all of us thought it was the best thing that could have happened, the planning twats served an enforcement order on them and had this ugly wall rebuilt, in Flettons of course and so it remains to this day, complete with cars causing a danger on the road, how can you have any sympathy, consideration or trust with such a pathetic local government department, inflexible to the end on a point of principle, w####s.

My advicwould be to get on with it without contactring the Local Authority, epsecially if you plan to do you test runs at weekends as they are generally not at work.

If you do try and involve them they will always err on the side of caution, which generally means you will have a lot of forms to fill in and maybe additional costs for no perceivable benefit.

You are using private land for non-public purposes. Let’s hope any neighbours are tolerant of the noise.

There are many occasions when it is best to be up front with the local authority, I would venture that this isn’t one of them.

    regards

    tc

Have any of you people taken note of what I have said, you will not get away with putting a jet in a car park and running it up without trouble! Even just parking it there will be a problem.Do not waste your time and transport fees in doing this without consultation. It only takes one miserable git to complain and you are in trouble, You will not get away with it, whatever the situation and even the possibility of public support, I doubt whether my missus or even I would be happy with someone next door to us running up a jet engine on a hot sunny sunday afternoon when we just want to crash in the garden, when this person hadn’t got permission to do so.
I know of situations where innocent people have had enforcement orders over removing small, crappy out of character walls that have inevitably given them immense grief and caused much expense afterwards.
Please don’t do anything without prior consultation, end of story.
Sorry Merlin, no offence meant, but I won’t reccomend you as a planning consultant.

Maybe somebody can answer this one. It has been claimed that the ‘armoured train’ run on the RH&DR ‘claimed a Messerschmitt’ during the war.

The wonderful story (and it probably is just that) is that the enemy aircraft misjudged its height and crashed while attempting to strafe the ‘small but perfectly formed’ steam locomotive.

Although the ‘armoured train’ was armed with a couple of Lewis guns I doubt that they would have managed to shoot it down but I suppose it is possible.

Go on the RHDR website, look on the history page and you’ll see a wonderful picture of the armoured train, it looks to be more potently equiped than just a few Lewis guns, I haven’t looked further into the incident, but looking at that picture, and it’s only part of the train, I wouldn’t doubt what they could have brought down, especially if it was low flying.
