Talking Tiger Moths, one incident that has always bugged me.
About 45+ years ago we were watching a barn storming display at the annual Hucknall airshow when a Tiger, and I recall the pilot had a foreign name, went too low and ripped off his undercarriage, he pulled out and carried out a perfect ‘wheels up’ landing on the grass.
Sounds improbable and I was very young at the time, though I do have a good memory, but it happened right in front of me, could it have been part of the act, I don’t know, but knowing more about the integrity of airframes these days, it could only have been staged, or could it, over to the Moth experts.
With regard to rolling too low, let us not forget the T-34C Mentor at Mildenhall in the 80’s, first fatal crash I witnessed and not dealt with very sensitively by the authorities either, having been shocked by the incident, it didn’t help to witness the poor victims being recovered and zipped into their body bags right in front of thousands of spectators, a scene I’ll never forget.

For me,music is an aural thing,not visual.I can see where you’re coming from re disabilities etc.When I first saw Brian Wilson (ex Beach Boys) after his stroke,I kinda felt the same.But then I closed my eyes and just listened.Yes,his voice was affected just a tad but the magic was still there in his songs.

I understand that, but in Greens case, the mumbling, the basic chords while others filled in didn’t make me want to shut my eyes because I remembered the days in the Nottingham Boat Club with the rubber penis on the amps and the general mayhem of it all didn’t relate to what I was seeing and hearing.
As for Brian Wilson, it was the same thing, yes, try and get away from the bizarre hand waving, but the voice was so naff, c’mon, sometimes we should just remember the legend, sympathy doesn’t always work, from what I’ve seen of Zeps performance from various sources, they can still do it, along with Pink Floyd, they must all be in the Keith Richards mould of surviveability.
I’ve seen the Stones in their dotage as well as their heyday, it’s a bit strange to see them now, Bills lack of presence is a real handicap, but how long will this go on before it gets rather sad.
Thats why I worry about a Kinks reunion, will the band throw themselves into ‘Autumn Almanac’ or have to do Rays, admittedly good, recent songs.
I watched the performance of Paul Macartney over Xmas on his US tour, yeh, right, most of the stuff featured was Beatles stuff, great, thats what the audience wanted to hear, and I loved to hear it myself, but I could see the spectres of John and George lurking behind him, it’s not the same, buy an exotic Island and move in with Kylie and forget it Paul.

Staying with reunions,here’s one I really hope happens.The Kinks may be reforming for a live concert.Now there’s a gig I would gladly pay money to see.

There were always divisions between Ray and Dave, the last interview I saw with Ray Davies prior to the release of his last album suggested they were still there, stroke or not.
I don’t know how badly he was affected by it, but the physical and mental strain to get going again must be very difficult.
Remember the rennaisance of Peter Green in the 90’s after all his problems, I saw him at the Lead Mill in Sheffield and quite frankly found it embarrasing, it was only the quality of the band around him, the hype and the sympathy thing that made me stay to the end of the concert.
Incidentally, whats happened to Peter Green, has he gone back into his shell or joined Syd Barrett in the ‘Great Gig in the Sky’.

Nice postings Kev, we live in the so called affluent, white dominated East Anglia, the only Asians are the friendly, integrated Indians, Sri Lankans and Chinese who run the corner shops and take aways.
On the day of the funeral, we saw the handful of local Moslems standing outside their Islamic centre, which is a crumbling Victorian house in the town, they looked pretty fed up with events to me, but being in a minority, and the seemingly tolerant attitude to ethnic groups around here as they don’t pose a threat to ‘Britishness’, there’s probably no need for them to embrace radicalism.
A few years ago we took our stepson up north to spend New Years Eve in Keighley with some friends.
We came off the motorway in Bradford and not having been up north before, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing, he thought we’d landed in a different country, thats a reflection of what it’s like down here, the last bastion of real England as my old man used to call it.
I always wonder whether Benazir had some sort of death wish involving her hopes that her martydom would solve all the problems of East/West antagonism. I always felt that her return would end in tragedy, she was a very brave woman to go back to Pakistan and throw herself back into the political arena, it was doomed to failure, the extremists would always get her in the end. Now we are watching the self destruction of Kenya, I wonder what hope there is for the world, it just seems to get worse, mankind doesn’t seem to be able to learn it’s lessons from the past.
Perhaps you should move down here Kev 35, Braintree is comparitively cheap and DX is only 20 mins drive away, you can wander round there and think of times past, as old gits like me tend to do more often.

C’mon leave Kylie alone, she appeals to a lot of people and did a reasonable acting job in Dr Who, don’t you think she’s aged though after her illness, poor thing, having got rid of Long John Silver, I think that Paul should get in there big time.
We could have a Beatles reformation, Paul, Ringo, Dani Harrison, Julian Lennon and Kylie acting out the role of Yoko, but slightly more pleasing to the eye, sounds good to me.

Slightly off thread, 6th of February will be the 50th anniversary of the tragic Munich Aircrash involving the Man Utd team and one of these aircraft.
Just for the record, on the 10th of February Man U will be playing their home game against City dressed in retro 1950’s kit without sponsorship logos as a memorial to those who died on that fateful night.
I’m not a fan of the club, but I remember that night well, it affected the whole country in fact, I expect that dear old Bobby Charlton will have a difficult time full of sad memories.
I assume the DX restoration team will be aware of this and note the occasion with the respect it deserves.
