If airshows are going to survive they need to pull in more than just the already converted. Ads in aviation mags will not reach these people. It’s certainly worth a go to see if this works. Dux will have a pretty fair estimate of the attendance they expect, they will notice any significant increase.
If it cost them £5,000, they only need to pull in an extra 210 people to turn a profit.

I take your point, but would this be showing their concern at the predicted lack of enthusiasts for an uninspiring event.
I notice this morning that there has been a definate lack of people trying to be first to publish photographs and make glowing praises about the flying display.
I did have a bit of a thought yesterday, perhaps with the talk on here over the past few weeks of the imminent return to flight of the Vulcan, that DX were hoping to pull off a coup and get a couple of flypasts, quite frankly that would have been magic, hope it happens today and gives us moaners a kick up the backside.

The 4 ship 2 minute warning scrambles at Waddo and Cottesmore airshows in the early 60’s, it always paid to stand on the flightline as close to where they were parked as possible so you could watch the crews running like hell from the crew room.
The Queens 1977 flypast, where if you were further out of London you saw 4 not 3, one being a standby.
Driving past Waddo in the early morning, listening on the radio to Thatchers virtual declaration of war on Argentina and being in the midst of frenzied activity, while trying to take pictures out the car window.
Pete TrumanWhile slumped on the settee the other night mindlessly watching ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’, we were amazed to see during one of the breaks, an advert for the DX airshow.
OK, it wasn’t amazingly sophisticated and not very long, but the question arose, how much did it cost to make and how much did it cost to show on prime time TV during a popular pogramme, must have taken a lot of the budget.
I couldn’t remember ever seeing an advert for an airshow before on TV, and we were surprised that Duxford of all places felt the need to do this.
There may have been a few grouses about the standard of the participation but I thought that DX always drew in the crowds regardless, it’s so easy to get to from so many places.
I had vowed to go to all the shows this year, but I’m not too well this week and don’t feel like hammering up the motorway today quite frankly, I couldn’t get anyone to go with me anyway, they weren’t inspired enough.
For those who are going, it’s very damp and misty this morning, but I gather it’s going to be a scorcher later and tomorrow.
Having said that, was it two years ago when the mist didn’t clear, I remember shivering under a car blanket watching the cricket on my pocket TV and wandering why the hell it was so clear just down the M11 at Lords.
Perhaps someone going today will give us a report later and if I’m up to it, I might go tomorrow.
Incidentally, will the TFC enclosure be there so I can take advantage of my pass.

I agree to a certain extent with what you say, but did these flights not cease for a period and is this not linked with Comrad Putins so called new ‘CCCP’ policy.
I think they’re just sussing out the Typhoon as an export rival, quite right to, perhaps they should send up some BBMF Spitties instead and really cause confusion, MkXIX’s would keep up with a Bear wouldn’t they.
As you say, a wonderful a/c which I was priviledged to see at Fairford some years ago, there must be loads of redundant models that the Russians would be prepared to pass on.
How about a Soviet Heroes museum next to the American Airforce Museum at Duxford, that could be interesting.
I remember at Fairford, the USAF made a point of parking a B-1 next to the
Tupelov, and put their best glam uniforms and sunglasses on, the Russians looked very dowdy, set up a paste table full of badges and were doing deals for trips round the aircraft, felt very sorry for them, but that was then and this is now, or has nothing changed.

Dave (sorry,David) Gilmour-ex Pink Floyd-is on BBC 1 Saturday the 8th of September at 11pm for 60 minutes.They’re gonna show a short version of the eagerly awaited DVD “Remember That Night”,which is released in the UK on Monday the 17th of September and on the 18th in North America 🙂 .
I think Roger Waters is ex Pink Floyd, not our Dave. Despite the strained ‘Lets be pals again’ concert in Hyde Park, something could happen again with the others.
I am looking forward to this concert, I think he is a very original and clever guitarist, apart from being innivotive, he proved he could, and was willing to play, basic stuff when he toured with McCartney a few years ago.
I was lucky enough to see him on his first tour with Floyd in 69 when he had replaced poor old Syd.

I actually like all of the musicians you mention and the death of Pavarotti is really sad. It’s very strange what people actually like. The chap I work with is 63, but he loves Rap, he thinks it’s incredibly clever, thinking about it, some of it probably is, especially Eminem, but I don’t care for it either myself, nor do I appreciate some of the modern thrash metal bands, I can plug in the old Strat and do it myself, should I pursue this career at 56, old git playing thrash metal, now thats a thought.

Just a question, have they digitally re-mixed the soundtrack to produce surround sound and if so, whats it like.
The problem with cinemas is that sometimes their sound systems are poor and it’s also difficult to find the right spot. The best sound system I heard in a cinema was in Blackpool of all places, as a tenous but related link I saw Star Wars there, it sounded amazing.
The best sound track ever for me was a special version of ‘The Longest Day’.
It was shown on release at the Nottingham Odeon in 64 and they installed a special 6 track sound system just for that film. Fortunately, my old man booked us to sit half way up in the middle and the effect was amazing, the aircraft flew right overhead, but the most impressive feature were the shells from the ship bombardment which started from the back of the cinema and passed overhead. Being a D-Day vet himself, I expected the old boy to put on a steel helmet and prepare to vacate the landing craft, but he told me that it was incredibly realistic and loved every minute of it.
Pete TrumanHas anyone read ‘Ark Royal’ by Mike Rossiter, concerning his attempts to find the wreck of the ship in the Med, but also detailling it’s history, including lots of interesting aviation details.
I found it lurking in W H Smiths in Barnstaple while on holiday.
I found it a very good read whilst on the beach and was intrigued at the fact that Paul Allen was instrumental in helping him to find and film the wreck.
My only grouse was that some of the warships mentioned in the book were wrongly described, which I was picking up as I went along, without any reference. I’m no great expert on WW2 ships, but I thought the research and knowledge could have been better, though to be fair, he does consider this in his prologue.
Anyone else read it, and what did they think

Are you winding us all up old chap? If not, I’d love to see a list of your favourites in your CD collection, or are they mainly 78’s, played on a gramophone with your faithfull Jack Russell sitting next to it.
Changing the subject slightly, we used to have one of the famous Dansette record players in the 50’s. It was in a cardboard case covered in some sort of checked beige plastic material, the actual deck being cream plastic with a fully automatic record changing system, for any record, at any speed. My brother obtained it along with some interesting records including Buddy Holly stuff on 78’s. The volume was so crap that we had to play it in the bathroom on an extension lead plugged into the light socket in order to get any sort of buzz. My uncle on the other hand had a fantastic radiogram and piles of 78’s, we had to change the steel needles quite regularly. His forte was a wartime collection of Spike Jones records, some of which have been constantly played on recent insurance adverts on the TV, driven me mad, and ruined my childhood memories.
When you look back on the systems throughout the years, who would have believed that you could put this small silvery disc into a system less than the size of a shoebox, with tiny speakers capable of delivering 100 watts, the quality of sound better than the real thing, and, you can do it in the car as well, the manufacturers system installed in our Peugot 307 estate is awesome, and this is’nt even considering downloads, MP3’s and I pods, something only our kids are in to, or are they, they seem to actually prefer to buy CD’s and have something substantial.

Don’t knock the heavy metal, my stepson loves it, ok, the new stuff I can’t cope with, but everyone should be given a chance, let it be.
As for Amy, she is great, but some of her new album material doesn’t do a lot for us, and her performance on the mainstage at Glastonbury was dreadful, but then she has problems, shown quite clearly that night, and, anyway, we like the way she looks, sometimes wierd can be an advantage.
She has the ability to cross over into so many styles that most performers can’t do, unfortunately, there is alot of a jazz orientation, probably the only style of music that we really can’t appreciate.
I hope she comes out the other side, finds her niche, and proves the true talent she really is, what ever type of music that is, jazz or otherwise.
