Don’t knock the heavy metal, my stepson loves it, ok, the new stuff I can’t cope with, but everyone should be given a chance, let it be.
As for Amy, she is great, but some of her new album material doesn’t do a lot for us, and her performance on the mainstage at Glastonbury was dreadful, but then she has problems, shown quite clearly that night, and, anyway, we like the way she looks, sometimes wierd can be an advantage.
She has the ability to cross over into so many styles that most performers can’t do, unfortunately, there is alot of a jazz orientation, probably the only style of music that we really can’t appreciate.
I hope she comes out the other side, finds her niche, and proves the true talent she really is, what ever type of music that is, jazz or otherwise.
Pete TrumanIf you look at the pictures on page 91 of the current Flypast, the Lightning could’nt get much lower, it only just seems to clear the small hut. Presumably it’s angle of attack means he was trying to get down to the Spitfires speed, ‘I’ll put on the brakes and he’ll fly right by’ Maverick, quote.
Looking closely again at the right hand picture though, it looks as if theres a spurt of reheat from the lower Avon, in which case the erk in the left hand picture may not have survived the incident, I know from experience, while standing near the threshold at Wattisham while the last ever RAF Phantom was on finals for the last time, he chose to deploy reheat while just overhead and accelarate away, I thought I was a goner and I wasn’t right underneath, the idiots that were, little kids whose parents should have known better, screamed in terror, but appeared to survive the incident, or did they.
Pete TrumanI watched that wierd film the other night, is it called Final Countdown, starring Kirk Douglas, when the Nimitz is transported back in time to face the Japanese fleet off Pearl Harbor.
On the face of it, a naff film, but quite enjoyable, fortunately with a good cast. The dog fight between the Zero’s and the Tomcats was most interesting, made me think of the possible scenario considered in the Indonesian conflict where Lightnings may have faced P-51’s.
If you have not seen the film, a/c from Nimitz are sent of to destroy the Japanese fleet, but the sad old time warp reappears and it doesn’t happen.
So, silly question, but on the same theme, what would have happened had the Jap air armada on it’s way to Pearl have dealt with a modern carrier like Nimitz, or more to the point, how would it have dealt with them, having sent most of it’s strike force off to deal with the Jap fleet, which it would inevitably have done, no real AA, nothing to deal with slow flying piston engined a/c, surely what was then arguably the most powerful carrier in the world would have not stood a chance against 1930’s technology in numbers, rather like the Bismark and Italian fleet couldn’t cope with Swordfish.
Daft comment on a silly Hollywood film, but one I find interesting.
Pete TrumanAre any of these rockets preserved in this country, I’ve sniffed around and found nothing.
I asumed that there would be something at the National Space Centre at Leicester, but looking at their website, not much is forthcoming, it’s looks more like Disneyland than a proper mueum.
It would be nice to see a dedicated centre set up at one of the original sites, if a lot of the old gear seems to exist at Spadeadam, ideal, but the MoD probably wouldn’t approve. That would leave the IoW site, good tourist spot too.
Incidentally, the spaceuk website is cool, I was surprised to see that they considered Brancaster in Norfolk as a launch site, nothing there but claustrophobic dune bunkers and a wrecked WW1 collier but a lovely tourist beach and village, most of the ground behind the beach is saltmarsh and a golf course. Surely they meant Weybourne, as a military infrastructure still existed there then, and had been used for launching things out to sea, now of course mainly occupied by the fantastic Muckleburgh Collection, and whose going to own up to loving every minute of going on their Gamma Goat.
An interesting fact was that the site wasn’t considered because of the threat to the North Sea oil rigs from falling boosters etc. Well why is it now perfectly safe to use the area as practice military a/c combat zone, if you’ve been up there, there’s never a dull moment, the risk must surely be greater than from a sparingly launched rocket.
Pete TrumanI remember going to the Great Sailing village fete near Andrewsfield where they had a fantastic model of the airfield set up in the village hall, complete with Marauders all at the amazing scale of 1:72.
The village hall was demolished to make way for posh expensive houses, so what happened to the model, is it now at the airfield, does anyone know anything about it. It must have been in the mid 90’s when I saw this because the local hall was being used as the accomodation for some of the cast of Lovejoy when they were filming round here, an added attraction, though Mr Macshane had vanished that day.
Who had one of those cardboard cut out BoB airfields which I seem to remember were promoted by Kellogs Cornflakes in the 90’s, the Spitfires and Hurricanes were supposed to have been supplied by Matchbox but they proved too expensive and were eventually supplied by Ertl I believe.
They must be collectors items by now, bits of cardboard nissen huts turn up around the house occasionally but I still have about 4 of each of the aircraft.
Pete TrumanOn an entirely random tangent, I’ve seen a morris group (dancing, not cars) perform a dance called “Blue Steel Rocket” at the Thaxted festival. It involves much throwing of sticks high in the air and attempting to catch them – as the announcer said “If we’d known there was all that throwing sticks, we’d have scheduled you before it got dark”.
By the way, to whoever made the comment about where Australia puts its illegal immigrants – watch your back, sonny, their biggest problem is with illegal immigrants from Great Britain!

I’ve seen live Allison Kraus and Union Station and Robert Plant with Led Zeppelin, I have to say that both concerts were probably the best live acts I ever saw, but, yes, just a little different in style, so how did they decide to combine.
Mind you, Kate Rusby performed with that useless, obnoxious dickhead Ronan Keeting, but I think it was a music company exercise, hopefully with his ill gotten fortune he’ll retire to some distant Irish coastal cottage and give up his ‘music’, Louis Walsh has a lot to answer for.
I know you’ll take the p##s out of me for saying this, but we have to watch the ‘X Factor’ in this house, it’s so amusing but embarrasing, why do these people think they have talent, and then they have the nerve to get all stroppy when they are told otherwise. My missus reckons we could have most of them for breakfast, but what happens to the winners of these competitions, zilch, where’s the black girl that won last year.
The only person with a modicum of success was Will Young, not our thing, as most acts are’nt, but we find it a rather bizzare watch on a saturday evening, after all it is music, of a kind.
Incidentally, the Bocking Brass Band played live in Braintree Park yesterday afternoon, I wasn’t feeling to great and didn’t go up there, but they sounded fantastic, we could hear it quite clearly from the garden anyway, and the icing on the cake, Lancaster flypast near the end, couldn’t tell whether they were playing the Dambusters march at the end though, the Merlins were too loud, that’s possibly the best music, 4 Merlins in sync.

Lots of Merlin noises today, and Tiger Moths, we’ve been inundated, I’ve chosen the day to sort out the garage so I have an excuse to watch the happenings.
Pete TrumanHaving watched some of the previous programmes it will be mainly snippets of the films, I have a real problem here as my missus is unlikely to want to watch it and I no longer have room to room TV coverage.
Just out of interest, how long ago did the British film industry actually make a good expensive war film, black and white stuff in the 50’s were appearing every week, and they are still good to watch today, I reckon that the last major production must have been A Bridge Too Far, and that was over 30 years ago, or do we consider Empire of The Sun as it had a mainly British cast and some wonderful flying scenes from Mr Hannah and Co.
Personally, my favourite war film of recent times is Thin Red Line, not much aviation interest, but an amazing film, well presented from some unexpected actors, some very famous, others not.
Pete TrumanI notice a lack of RAF hardware, fair enough, we’re being told it’s due to operational commitments in Afghanistan and Iraq, but, I heard on the radio the other day, following the USAF friendly fire incident, that all we had in Afghanistan were 12 Harriers, so where is everything being deployed, the Welsh Valleys?
Not knocking the RAF, they are the dogs, but how many operational a/c do we have, surely not all the best pilots are flying 12 Harriers around the Kybher Pass at low level.
