Pete TrumanQuite frankly, as far as I’m concerned the Dakota is part of the magnificent BBMF flight full stop.
I have rarely, if ever seen it fly with the Spit and Hurri, most of us must have seen the combination with the Lanc so many times.
I am never dissapointed to see the BBMF Dak, it’s a lovely a/c and it was an enjoyable experience to get up close to it at DX last month, using it as the drop plane for the Falcons was an added bonus.
If the Lanc was booked in to honour vets, well thats what it’s for isn’t it, good for all concerned, I wouldn’t complain if they turned up with the black Chippies, they are part of the BBMF too aren’t they, in fact I think they should do that on occasion, it could be a bit of fun, after all, it’s not just the BBMF that fly warbirds at airshows, is it, unlike in my early days when thats all you got.

Pete TrumanJust out of interest, how many are there, how long are likely to be there, and where on earth do they park them all, there never seems much room at Lakenheath at the best of times.
When I went up there a couple of months ago, it was non stop action, with a mix of F-15’s and German Tornados, must be a good old traffic jam at the end of the runway at the moment.
I haven’t seen a Hog flying for years, it used to be quite entertaining to sit on the beach at Dunwich and watch them fly out from Bentwaters.
Incidentally, whats happened to the fishing boats that were kept at Dunwich, when I went there last month, there was no evidence that they were around anymore.
Pete TrumanI’ve never been to an airshow at Cosford so I can’t comment on that, the local rail system seems to have neglected it though, don’t forget they are short of trains, well, not in theory, there are loads of perfectly servicable DMU’s and coaching stock stored out of use all over the country.
The philosophy of going early and leaving late usually works.
The only times I had real problems were at Cottesmore in 1958 and Coltishall 1980.
We used to go to Cottesmore by public transport, train to Oakham and a special bus service to the base. Can you believe that there was a massive traffic jam in 58 when there must have been a fraction of the cars on the roads compared to today. In the end we had to get off the bus and walk, not getting in until the show had started, it was while walking alongside the cars that we learnt that the Vulcan had crashed at Syerston.
Coltishall was a nightmare, the jams started at Norwich and I only got in by dodging through Wroxham and using the back lanes. Even then I was stuck at the end of the runway for ages, I remember watching the Lightning display from the car.
After half the show was curtailed by fog, the battle to get out began, we finally got onto a public road at 21:00, even then I had to dodge round the back lanes and avoid Norwich, getting home to Braintree at midnight, my mother refused to go to another airshow after that.
I recall going to Finningley a few years ago, getting very comfy just behind the crowdline when the early birds decided to go home. Now this was not far in to the display and the powers that be had got a ridiculous route through the crowd. My old man was in his late 70’s at the time and refused to move, so what happened, the good old police threatened to eject him from the airfield.
We spent the rest of the day watching and smelling the fumes from passing cars, at least they must have got home to watch Coronation Street.
I remember a very amusing incident at North Weald Fighter Meet. My mate and I got in very early and the car looked very lonely sitting in the field.
Before the display started, I went back to the car for the sarnies and could’nt find it. Now it wasn’t a common car, a black Alfa Romeo, but the number of extra vehicles and lack of landmarks made me start to wonder whether it had been knicked. It hadn’t, but after that, I always put a little flag on the aerial.

I was sitting watching the smaller pike cruising about when there was a real altercation in the water.
The bigger pike had grabbed it by the head and there was a real fight, unfortunately the small one lost.
I managed to seperate them but the little one decided to give up, however, I kept prodding it and kept it going, I tried to pick it up but it went for me.
I can’t see anything floating in the water so it might be OK, I think it’s time to put them in the river.
The blackbirds have found the little froggies lurking in the grass and are picking them off, not good and not a lot I can do about it.
Last night we had a barbie and whilst sitting outside, the spaniel found a toad, great, the poison worked a treat and she spent all evening retching, very uncomfortable for the dog, but amusing to watch.
Had a Willow Warbler on the bird table this morning, very unusual.

I lived in Finchingfield for many years until recently and up the bridle path beside my house was a very interesting underground steel turret.
It seemed to have been used as a depositorey for peoples garden rubbish for years.
A few years ago in a blaze of local publicity, it was ‘rescued’ for restoration by a local joiner, but seems to have sat in bits in his yard ever since.
I did contact Duxford a while ago, but they didn’t seem very interested at the time, though, when I was walking round the hangars at the BBMF ‘Do’ I noticed an identical one on display.
As far as I know, it was used by the local Home Guard, whether this was inconjunction with nearby Wethersfield airfield, I don’t know.
It does have some aviation history because I think that the blokes manning it captured the crew of the Dornier that was shot down nearby, probably also went looking for the crew of the Wellington that crash landed in nearby fields, who thought they were in occupied Holland and hid in a ditch for 24 hours.
Perhaps the bloke who aquired it hasn’t got the time to do anything and may be prepared to donate it to some organisation that will, I happen to know he’s a nice bloke so who knows.

Pete Trumani have to say that that sounds like it was one hell of an airshow, pity the english aviation industry has little to show for itself in the form of experimental aircraft anymore 🙁
Interesting point, the last time I recall seeing anything like that was the display of the EAP at the Reds anniversary airshow at Scampton nearly 20 years ago, fantastic display, but now it’s festering away at Loughborough Uni, what a waste.
Before that, I remember seeing the prototype Tornado fighter variant at Coltishall in 1980, it’s first public appearance, well, sort of, the fog that day made it difficult to see it.
I must have seen some wierd and wonderful things at airshows over the years, but living near Hucknall as a kid, made it all seem rather mundane.
Pete TrumanI think, dimensionally, it is smaller, but that big radial engine at the front makes the ‘190 seem a lot larger (in my opinion).
I think it has a lot to do with the taller undercarriage as well, if this thing would download my pics of the 3 together, you would see what I mean.
