I have come across it with WW1 phtoographs, where people think they hold the copyright because they own the prints (or even negatives) – even in a case where the photographer died more than 70 years ago.
The Valiant, as the first, was alliterative with Vickers (Compare Hawker Hunter, Supermarine Swift). The other two were given ‘V’ names to fit in with the ‘V’ theme.
Fighters were usually given names suggesting speed or aggresion
RAF naming policy in those days did follow rules, they just changed the rules every so often!
The Revell 1/72 F6 model had markings for an aircraft in this scheme – iirc there was a photo in Richard Ward’s Hunter Squadrons of the RAF – I’ll see if I can find the book.
I’ve seen the BBMF flying with current frontline jets – Spitfire/Typhoon for example. And the Red Arrows with the Vulcan
At the time there was a degree of dismay that a complete Wellington did not emerge. The Dornier is 25 years older, and could have a lot of sand in it, so a whole aeroplane coming up in one lift must be something of a long shot.
Added to which, the Dornier has been in a salt water environment as against the fairly anaerobic fresh water environment of Loch Ness

Incidentally I understood that the LVG came back from Old Warden supposedly to go into the Milestones of Flight gallery. It looked fine last time I saw it at Shuttleworth so why does it now need restoring?
There were a number of compromises made to fly it, especially in terms of the fabric used. I beleive RAFM wants to re-cover her with accurate printed lozenge, rather than the ‘painted’ fabric she had at Old Warden.
The conservation v restoration arguement is an interesting one, and perhaps reflects the ‘professional’ museum/historian mindset that has come to prominence. Previous generations worked on the basis that transport and technology should be displayed in a ‘pristine’ or complete state, the modern one is about preserving originality. I can see +ves and -ves in both approaches.
Just out of interest, does anyone know what type of work the Buccaneer could do that HHA cant carry out with their Hunters?
Low level/high speed target work would be the most likely – possibly in connection with the later phases of the T45 Destroyer programme (I beleive that was the task that HHA had in mind when they bought her).
You have to take the title in context of the series to which this article belongs – have a look at the linked articles
What helicopter is that? Fantastic photo’s of some not so common planes there. Would also be interested to know about the skyraider
BuAer No 127894, which Bauger’s site asys:
127894 (c/n 7909) to French AF as No. 68, sold in USA, registered Jan 1977
to J. Spanich of Detroit, MI as N92072.
Deregitered by the FAA earlier this year:

But seems to have been in SA for a long time
I guess the USAF WEst Coast F-16 Demo team painted up one of their baggage pods to resemble BBD
10 Sqn will be the first Voyager Sqn
XIII Sqn will re-equip with Reaper
51 Sqn will be re-equipped with Rivet Joint/ Airseeker
Those have all been confirmed by the MOD – the serial numbers of the RC-135s will have the same digits as the original Nimrods, which add up to 51!!
IV(R) Sqn will be re-equipped with Hawk T2 – 19 Sqn to Disband
14 Sqn will re-equip with Shadow R1
42(R), 55(R), 111, 120 and 201 plus a lot of existing Reserve Sqns will disband
70 Sqn will get the A400M
Hadn’t heard the one about the Shadow component of 5 Sqn being re-assigned to 14 Sqn, but it makes sense – 42, 55, 111, 120 and 201 going is no surprise either.
76 Squadron, having only recently (2007) been issued to the Tucano Air Navigation Squadron, has been disbanded again, as the RAF are not training Navigators anymore.
Big well done on that job guys!
What’s the aircraft in the foreground with the interesting camouflage? Obviously a Hawker
Would be remarkable if after all this time they were able to close the case.
How about the possible?
DH9
Hawker Hind
Blenhiem
Lancaster
Canberra
Vulcan
Tornado (Which I beleive has more bombing sorties flown than all other post war bombers put together)
Legends 2013! (And if you could get the Brooklands Vimy…..)
