Man..what an early christmas present !

Ron & Graham , thanks for posting those great looking A-2’s …the real McCoys indeed. 388th BG I see….”Fortress for Freedom” group from Knettishall, near the lovely village of Coney-Weston. I spent a couple of great days around there looking at local 8th airfields and meet some of the greatest people anywhere ! All this talk about A-2’s and photographs has gotten my passion back for the history of A-2’s. As of late most of my reading and travels have been to Normandy , with interest in the airborne operations of the 101st & 82nd and British airborne! If you can find a book called ” Classy Chassy” by Ian Logan & Henry Nield, it has most fantastic A-2’s and nose art in this small book. Including a great color shot of “YANKEE DOOD IT”…now on display at the US Air Force Museum at Dayton ,Ohio. Has many of the jackets from the 401st BG. Thanks guys for posting those wonderful jackets, just thinking about where they a have been in history is something to marvel. Bet the folks in Coney Weston are still wondering where the Yank went with the funny southern accent and hoping he’ll return on day.
Can’t wait to get back !!!!!!!! I need to hit Bill Gates up for a some money to restore that control tower at Bodney and make it my second home !!!!

I think at one time on this great forum we talked about a project to put Merlin’s on a P-38. However the powers that be in Washington did not follow through with the project. I believe I have read in some books and here on this board that the Allison engines had problems in the cold weather in the ETO ? If the USAAF needed long rang escorts in numbers to protect the daylight Eighth Airforce raids, guess they tried and did not like the results of the P-38’s performance. Or needed it in the Pacific..I know I would feel so what safer over enemy territory with two engines and all that upfront fire power of the P-38. Hope that one day Duxford will have a flying P-38 on display!

I remember see this on CBS Evening News

    Dave

Greetings, I assume you are speaking of the huge scale RC models that fought a WWII battle. I think the guy was from Iowa in the states, I have this story on my pitch reel at work somewhere, they even had a Iwo Jima flying raising.
Huge scale B-29 flew in this mock battle, compete with battleships and landing craft. Will do a search and find out where and who it is ! I think you have the correct name. Usually had it around our national holiday…July 4!!!!

    Thanks!

    Martin:

Did you see my message to you about the Swiss film made with USAFF airmen during the war ? I got a reply on the Eighth message boards and found a copy of the film , with help from someone in Belgium. It was something I had been searching from since I saw this British documentary called ‘ Whispers from the Sky”, shown in the USA on the Discovery Channel. It delt with what the RAF Bomber Command called (LMF) and USAFF crews going to neutral countries like Sweden & Switzerland. Thanks if you saw the message and started to email me back …thanks !

    Seve:

In a word …WOW, great set of jackets and your work is outstanding, thanks so much for your outstanding contribution here. With the current price of an Eastman one can’t mess up when painting a jacket. Love the radio controlled aircaft, your right about having your own air force! That B-17 is a great looking bird of course Ron has to be happy with those Square D marking of the 100BG ! Spent much time looking at your work and its outstanding, thanks for posting such variety of jackets here. Eastman Jackets cost close to 800 dollars here, but they are so great looking and like investing in rare coins or gold…I am sure their value grows with time. Hope you will add a BlueNose P-51 to that fine air force of yours …..will check your site from time to time to see if you’ve added more jackets. How many would you say you completed so far ? Enjoyed your work…an early christmas present for BlueNoser352 today !

    Thanks !

    Red Tail P-51

I believe that this is the Red Tail P-51 that crashed not long ago…just remember seeing the story on CNN here in the states. If not this one , then there was a P-51 that cracked up on landing….maybe someone else can fill in the blanks. Kermit Weeks “Cripes A Mighty 3rd” is one great bird..fully restored and minus the 50 cals that dont work…Maj Preddy could get in this Mustang today and fly a mission !!

    TC !
