The Peregrine ws designed especially for the Whirlwind, based on the Kestrel. I suspect duxfordhawk’s right, by the time they found out it was a dog, all available Merlins had been allocated.

I’m no expert on the Spanish Civil War, quite the opposite in fact, but I gather it started around the middle of 1936.

IIRC, the Hurricane first flew in 1935 and the Spitfire in March 1936.

I knew roughly what that (those?) lump had to look like, but that is pretty amazing. Shame there’s nothing to give it scale.

According to Putnam etc. 265 were built by Avro and 1 by Victory Aircraft. No specific date for the last flight but into the late fifties in Canada at least.

Also rightly famed for it’s excellent Adnams Broadside.

Trust me to live a hundred and odd miles away.
