I agree, my point should really have been that the capability of the aircraft in it’s millitary role should not have ANY impact on it’s certification in a civialian role.
As we all should know, once a millitary aircraft is de-milled for civilian use it is no longer capable of it’s intende role other than flight.

Re the US, would the FAA be happy that a nuclear capable low level bomber was flying around the good old US of A in private ownership?
Outside of NASA, I somehow can’t see it myself.
Surely ‘Enola Gay’ is a fine example that the FAA was happy to allow a ‘nuclear capable’ bomber to fly around the good old US of A in private ownership??.

If any one is actually interested the scramble today has so far raised £55,106 in pledges.
And as for sending 558 to the states, it would be a logistical nightmare. surely its about time that people accepted the fact that shipping 558 off to the states is as likely as me pulling that nice Abby from N.C.I.S.
Well if you notice my last post on here then, yes I am!!, well done to all involved.
Anyone got any pics from the other Vulcan visits?.
John.
Afternoon all,
I was present today at NAM doing cockpit tours on XM594 when the Vulcan Scramble team arrived today, they were perfectly on time and looked like they were enjoying the day, I wish them all the best and hope they complete the scramble, a few pics from today…..
Arrival….

A little photocall….

XM594 and the crowd….

And then they were off to the next destination!!….

Best of luck all.

One of the best books to look in would be ‘The Last Lanc’ by Patrick Kilvington, it lists just about every Lanc and a bit of its history.
As it happens i have one here.
For SW336 it reads as follows-SW336 Conv ASR/GR.III, 37 sqn Apr 59, 38 MU Mar 52, SS(BA) Jul 56
If you can get through the jargon or all that!
Should that be 37 sqn Apr 49? not 59?

John.
Thanks for that Peter, the only thing now is to determine if she was SOC becouse of the accident and possibly what the circumstances of the accident are.
Brilliant sleuthing gents!!.
John.
Thanks gents, I look forward to any updates.
Regards,
John.
Thanks for the info gents, would the serial (SW336) be traceable, maybe give us a clue as to what happenned and if she was repaired?.

John.
Any idea’s anyone???
John.
Thats gotta be one of the luckiest pilots EVER!!!!!
John.
Andy,
I didn’t think about the electrical start system:o, aside from the astronomical cost, could you imagine the look on peoples faces when you hit the start button, only to be met with the dry whir of an electric motor instead of the spine tingling weeeeeeeeeeeeeee Pssssssssssssssst !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lightning fans would be running for the hills 😉
John.
In short……no, it’s avpin or nothing.
Sorry!!
John.
excuse my ignorance but wot is avpin exactly? Starter fuel?
Avpin is the short or slang term for iso-propyl-nitrate, if you say IPN very quickly you will see why they ended up calling it avpin.
IPN is a monopropellant and a low-sensitivity explosive, with a detonation velocity of approximately 5400 m/s, it is highly unstable and could make your day very interesting should it find a source of ignition:eek:
IPN as some know was used in the starting of the engines on the Lightning and some other aircraft types, the Avpin tank is housed in the spine just aft of the cockpit and if you see pictures of a liney stood on the aircraft with what appears to be a watering can, then he is topping up the avpin tank.

Thanks for that VS, they must have deflated the oleos to make her sit right, as for the de-milling they would have done quite a bit to her, all the det charges in the seat would have been removed and the firebottles would have been either removed or drilled and the charges removed too, methyl bromide and explosives are quite harmfull to the general public!!!.
They may have also mollested the fuel lines and the electrics while they were in the engine bays just to make sure that no one tried to get her going again.

John.
Some lovely shots Gary, I must get down to Brooklands one day, shame it’s at the other end of the country to me!!.

John.
