This is ‘The Major’, Regular pilot Sqn/Ldr Paul Day OBE AFC RAF Rtrd. Known to many as Major, he is a former Officer Commanding BBMF and spent 23 years on the flight. He is probably the most experienced Spitfire pilot in the world with over 1,000 hours on type.
IMHO to pay £30 to have a tour of a living breathing Spitfre by such a well respected Spitfire pilot would be a priviledge, had I known prior to going there I would have booked one without hesitation.
John.
Thats the one!!!.
Maybe not an ‘add-on’ in the true-est of terms as it was an experimental airframe and not an add-on to an in service airframe, but still as you say it pioneered the way for greater things.

How about the meatbox at Newark Air Museum that has an extra engine shoehorned into the fuselage to give it extra lift for a short take off??.

By the tone of his description he is very blunt and straight to the point but one thing that is missing is the history.
If I was a prospective bidder then I would want evidence/proof/history of this item before I made a bid, this is also a double edged sword for the seller as offering the history of the item in his description would no doubt attract more bids.
Or………..is it that he does not want to give the history of the item as forum members would then know where it came from, possibly landing him in trouble????.
IMHO he is hiding something………Note to abij1230 your actions are being watched by forum members 😀 😀

Well Vulcans were’nt a single purpose tool, just ask the Argentinians, finally used in anger just before retirement. And if u do a bit of digging, I think u will find that the Vulcans had to be modified to fit the nuclear devices of the day and dont forget, basically the last 20 odd years of their lives the RN had the Nuclear deterant. Im pretty sure theres more informed forumites that can point u in the right direction to find info on VUlcans other than saying “stick it in Google”. Hope this helps. 😀
Bex
PS: Flpflop, nearly there mate, all the best to you & your colleagues.

Although you are on the right lines I’m afraid in todays political climate she will be seen and remembered by some as a weapon.
Yes they were not a ‘single purpose tool’ but for each purpose that the Vulcan had it was for one function and that was a bomber, no matter what it delivered.
The way I like to look at it was self defence, we never started a war with the Argentinians, we simply defended our borders by whatever means necessary.
Even in her most harmless role as a tanker she was tasked with keeping our defences in the air ready to protect our country.
No I don’t think IMHO she was ever a WMD but a DEFENDER of the realm and a bloody good one too, I just hope that the pollitacal nimby’s and pansy enviromentals get their own way and put the brakes on before she makes airshows what they used to be.
As for not flying yet, I am happy to wait till next years season knowing that everything will be done properly and safetly.
Best of luck to you all guys………

John.

The open day at Brunty was penned in for Sept 30th but was cancelled, I think, as they say, that is that for this year.
There is a flurry of activity at Brunty to get the roof on before winter sets in and hopefully next year, if there is a good turnout, we might see the rest completed.
All the very best for the move on 173, hope everything goes smoothly and to plan.
Kindest Regards,
John.
IIRC the Phantom FGR2 was fitted with a scope for the WSO, there was so much in the back that there was no forward vision for him, The remedy was to fit a scope on the port side in the framing between the two canopys.
