Morning all,
After reading this thread I wanted to go and see the Gazelle for myself so yesterday I got my sorry behind down to Doncaster for a look see.
I was totaly blown away by what I saw, she is a perfect example of preservation at it’s most highest standard, the display was perfect and gave the mind lots of food for thought, here are a few pics……

Not bad considering how she was not so long ago……

The rest of the museum is fantastic, it’s been a while since I last went and I kinda forgot what it was like, it’s like a really good junk shop, you can rumage around for hours and still keep finding lots of gems.
The cockpit collection looks to be growing in number and the Sea king is being restored, the other halls have some really good displays and the whole place comes highly recomended, the only gripe is that the signposts to get there are a little vague but hey thats just cos I’m useless with a map!!!.
A Couple more……

Well done all at Doncaster and keep up the good work, I will be there for the model show on Sunday.
Regards,
John.
Another consideration when preserving ex millitary jet that has come to light since the recent trouble in the USA regarding the retirement and preservation of the F-14.
I do not know the full list of other forces that operate the Tornado but think about this, if our wonderfull government retires the Tornado fleet before others do then would they scrap the majority of the fleet to stop spare parts falling into the wrong hands?.
A lot of posts have also considered that ex-mill fast jets could still pose a threat if used by an undesirable, yes this might be a possibility BUT and this is a big BUT I feel that the Lightning and the Phantom pose no threat to todays Eurofighter, The possibility of getting either jet armed and using it as a weapon would just be impossible and terrorists would not try and use one to fly into a building 9/11 style as the loss of life would be minimal (over hijacking a 747).
Bex’s comment about starting some of these old jets is valid I’m sure but the information is out there, I never thought about this before Bex mentioned this but I think I would be able to start a Lightning (after several attempts!!:D :dev2: ), attatch ground power, lift gang bar, open hp cocks, push start buttons……….pppppssssssssssssttttttt….wooooooooooosssshhhh….:dev2: :dev2: :dev2: .
I would like to think that the RAF could be interested in forming a heritage flight that preserve and fly at airdisplays such as RIAT, Farnborough ect, they should at least consist of a Jaguar (QinetiC still have a flyer), a Phantom and a Tornado, possibly a Canberra pr.9 as these only retired recently and would not be to hard to get back in the air, oh and yes a Lightning:rolleyes: , think of a line up like that lot doing curcuits in formation:eek: .
Regards,
John.
I like the idea Bex but I think that the government would never entertain such a plan, several reasons spring to mind……
We already have the BBMF which represents our warbird heritage
The HHA group that have several Hunters and Canberra, a Gnat (I think:o ) and soon to be Buccaneer
XH558 will hopefully soon grace our skys once again
The RAF displays which include the Tornados, Hawks, Typhoons, Linx and Chinook helicopters represent our todays airforce
The Eurofighter which represents our today and future airforce
The funding for such an idea would never get the go-ahead as all the above represent an all encompassing history of our airforce and therefore the is no requirement at this time for the RAF to get involved with a.n. other preservation group to get a jet back in the air.
Lets not forget that RAF axed it’s Merlin display team due to fundng and they also retired a perfectly good airforce in 6SQD Jaguars to save a measly 1 million, I sure it would take more than a million to get even a well preserved jet back n the air.
This is only my very basic and ill informed opinion and I think your opener for a discusion is brilliant, sadly IMHO we have plenty of historic jets and warbirds to keep us going for a while.

John.
Christ allmighty that is stunning:eek: 😮 , I am off to Donny quick sharp.
Well done all involved it looks incredible.

Flight deck of XM607 on Black Buck 1… mind you, with my weight, they probably would have run out of fuel…..
Failing that, I like the idea of being anywhere on the south east coast during 1940…
How wierd is that, as I was reading through this thread my mind was made up on the Black Buck 1 raid and then I read your post.
Failing XM607 I would like to have been on the flight deck of the one that had to divert to Rio (forget the particulars, my head is fried after a long shift), to witness what they went through and the calm profesionalism with which they carried it out.

John.
Smashing stuff Bex, the silver Lightning is super but then again I am biased:diablo: 😀 .
John.
😀 😀 Thought you would be the first to reply Bex!!!!:D 😀 .
While I was ambling around her i did remember you had a fondness for the Canberra so I blarted away, the guys were fantastic and took me on an impromptue walkround and filled me head full of stuff, it was great:p .
The office is absolutely stunning and although cockpit tours are done while I was there she was ‘live’ so to speak with power so I was not allowed to sit in her but I did push my mush in there and bagged these three shots.

Starting to get a liking for these ere Cranberry thingy’s:D .

East Midlands Aviation Museum have a Saudi F.6 (?) painted in 74 Sqn colours.
Les,
This is true it is an ex Saudi machine and yes she is in 74sqd markings after all other Saudi markings had been removed (save the tailcode).
To add some more to the whole saga I believe it is not entirely to do with all of the markings but just the Shahada, The Shahada is the writing within the green box on the tail and translated means, There is no God but Allah and Muhamed is his prophet.
This is a religious symbol and at the time was not allowed to be displayed on anything other than Saudi owned equipment, now times have changed and I believe that with permision it is possible to display ex Saudi machines in full markings.
Oh yeh and Dux has a Saudi Strikemaster on display in full RSAF livery:D .
Regards,
John.
An impressive landing considering all the obsticles, cars, bridges, barriers, lamposts and best of all the stretch he landed on is curved!!!!.
Well done to the pilot.
John.
LL
Just remembered that Duxford also has a Saudi Strikemaster resplendant in full origional markings in their new hanger.

IFAIRC it is not so cut and dry as “you can’t” with the Saudi government, a quick chat with Coventry Air Museum will help you with this matter as they have their Saudi two seater restored and painted in Saudi colours (albeit not totaly origional).
The way I see it NEAM has a unique oportunity to display an origional Saudi jet in origional Saudi markings, it would be a travesty to rub out and paint over these as it was one of the reasons why I travelled to NEAM to see her, what with all thats going on though I think another visit is in order.
I am not about to start harping on about what should be done with the Lightning as ultimately it is down to manpower and money, if she is painted up then so be it as at least she will have some attention and will be protected for years to come.
Kindest regards,
John.
