Is it to do with the Ejector exhausts that the Merlin has?

From the website http://www.usaaf.net/ww2/night/nightpg5.htm
Lt. Col. Winston W. Kratz, director of night fighter training in the United States, bet $500 that the Mosquito could outperform the Widow. According to the 422d NFS historian, the competing P-61, “tweaked” to get maximum performance, proved faster at all altitudes, “outturned the Mossie at every altitude and by a big margin and far surpassed the Mossie in rate of climb.” All in all, the historian noted, “a most enjoyable afternoon-Kratz paid off.”
This a case of public relations of national pride?
From what Ive read it was extremely successful in the field but came at a time when the war in the air was winding down. The allies had air superiority at that time so any targets would be opportunist in nature where as earlier in the war it would have been a different story. As a purpose built nightfighter it had been built with all the lessons learnt from previous attempts and had the newest tech available.
Google is your friend.
There is a lot of stuff on the net…

All frames are .035″ 2024 T3 except for F10 and F19 which are thicker at .063″ (I think).Flange width is .55″ (14mmish) for all the frames.Frame 8 and 10 use about the same width flange for the C section spacers at about half inch (12.7mm).Frame 11 only has the C section spacers where it joins the longerons.
