A proper Strategic Defense Review is exactly what we need, followed by a substantial increase in funding, but it won’t happen.

British governments are prepared to talk about defense, but never to pay for it.

Weirdly enough no one has sugested here a stretched and reengined C-17 derivative. Something like the C-141A to B model “heavy surgery” in the 80ยดs…

Can it be done? Does it make any (operational/economic) sense?

    Best Regards,

    Hammer

A stretch might be feasible, but just from this picture it would look to me (an untrained eye I admit) that the extra section added behind the main landing gear would prevent the aircraft from taking off or landing. If you wanted to stretch the fuselage it would have to keep the main gear at the back, just in front of the rear ramp/door.

Boeing could buy rights to An-124, or license production of an Americanised version. It’s either that or upgrade the C-5As, keeping ancient aircraft in the air, re-designing the C-17 for a role to which it is entirely unsuitable or a totally new design.

Certainly in the USA I believe Police dogs have (in some regards) equal legal status to people; or at least harming them is regarded as ‘assaulting an officer’.

Ok, here I am, in full fancy-dress regalia. (No, I don’t normally dress like that :D)

Would the Antonov be acceptable to the US in political terms though? What about modified civlian Freighters with opening nose/tail doors?

I realise the kind of expense this would entail, but it would be cheaper than a whole new aircraft from stratch? Or perhaps Lockheed could be convinced to Re-open a C-5 line, update the designs?

The C-17 is undoubtedly good at what it does, but for most basic loads its capabilities just aren’t required.

Still, even if C-17s could make up for the capacity lost there would still be a shortfall in outsize airlift capacity, NATO is having to charter An-124s regularly as it is. Isn’t there a requirement for something akin to the An-124, militarised A-380?

Very high altitude recon platforms might be a useful role for airships, they could be virtually untouchable to all but ASAT weapons.

Fit with a few modified SDBs, could be quite effective…

It’s odd to think of a world without him, even if I never was a fan in particular. This must be how people felt when Elvis passed, such a huge personality who produced so much of the soundtracks we (or I at least) grew up with.

I always got the feeling he wasn’t very happy with his life, which I hope wasn’t true. He’ll be missed, most certainly.

Goodbye MJ, gone but not forgotten.
