I feel that the question should be ‘Are HM armed forces broken?’ the answer to which is yes, unfortunately.

Years of accountants running the show, political leadership with the backbones of mollusks, middle management and the pc brigade gaining a foothold in the MoD, have reduced the forces to a shadow of their former selves.

Engines and Ejector seats can be bought off the shelf for a number of designs.

I was told that F-16 and F-15s may have common engines if you so wished, confirm?

But to be honest, designing a new aircraft is usually with a specific role in mind, using with the best technology available, so using common components could apply across your fleet of aircraft, but by the time the next generation comes along new and improved parts would be used.

How about the UK being denied information on the JSF, despite being a level 1 partner?

I don’t entirely blame the US for their policy on this one, but I really can’t follow their logic that if the UK knew the software codes then it might be used against the US. That is laughable.

As i understand it the contract includes spares and lifetime support, with training as well.

I suspect these will all be the Tranche 3 aircraft the RAF can’t really afford, is there any confirmation of this?

Why not give XH558 a test flight on the borders of russian airpsace…..see what they do 🙂

I believe the Vulcan never had the range to make to to Russia and back, the crews were expected to either land at an allied airfield somewhere closer than the UK or keep on flying east and live in a yurt, somewhere in the urals for the rest of their days 😀

The money already spent, and the commonality in terms of maintainence and training were my main reasons for thinking EH101 as well.

But i can imagine a pfi deal for the SAR role, as is the way the govt likes it these days. Maybe one day all defense needs will be privately operated?

8?! Wow, one would have been enough.

I imagine this is just a case of Putin wanting to look big in front of everyone.

I think 60 years is a reasonable age for an airforce. Does anybody know which is the worlds oldest? I think it might be Romania for some reason?

Speaking of ‘zap zap’ i hear the F-35 might even get cleared for directed energy weapons at some point. If this happens i expect MiG to roll out an X-wing clone soon after 😀

    Here’s a question,

with the A-10 getting a little old, what will its replacement be? Given the demonstrated need for a dedicated cas platform, will the USAF get one or simply replace it with multi role F-35s?

I believe the USMC were embarked for joint training, so that they know how to inter-operate with the RN. But I still agree with the points made that UK plc should be putting far more into defence, especially considering the commitments we have. That we are forced to go cap in hand to another nation for even the most basic requirements is shameful. Apparently american troops nickname the british ‘the borrowers’ because they are continually borrowing US equipment.

(That either makes me thick or at least on the same level as most Brits who have expressed an opinion on the logo, per post #6).

I understood what the logo meant, i just felt that it was unclear, and having spent £400k on the logo we would have gotten something that is at least legible.

Apparently the animated version has causes epileptic fits in sufferers, which is an an unusual side effect.
